Oh hey, I had this exact idea and wrote it down 2 1/2 years ago in my google doc list of ideas to use in a dnd campaign. "If you ask a treasure chest if it’s a mimic, it legally has to tell you if it is. (Or even if they don’t, if you at least say that to them, they all fall for it and either tell you or say “That’s actually not a real law” and blow their cover anyway.) Another idea from the list: a guy who tells you to "answer me these riddles three" and each riddle is just a giant punching you
Another: Sfinks - a mish mash of cat and woman who tells easy riddles and gets more & more flustered when people get them right. “What's smaller than a house, bigger than a breadbox, and the exact size & shape of a chair?” “Thirty white teeth on a red tongue. First they stamp, then they chew. What are they?” “What walks on 4 legs- well really 2 legs and 2 arms, when it’s a baby- then on 2 legs, then on 3 le- okay, it’s still 2 legs but they also have a cane, which is like a 3rd- when it’s old?”
Interspecies Reviewers, there is also a really good anime. Might be hard to find though since it's not on any streaming service (afaik). It was originally streamed by Funimation but by 3rd episode it got too raunchy for them and was canned, so you'll have to sail the high seas or find the disc release.
Also the mimic place here isn't in the anime, I really wish they did another season but I kinda doubt it.
Given how old frieren is she's probably opened over 1000 chests that registered as a mimic. Since she can easily kill mimics from the inside (she just doesn't like to because it gets mimic guts in her hair) so there's no real risk if it is a mimic, that's 10 chests she would have missed if she just went with the spell.
People are capable of coming up with very stupid ideas about what laws are without anybody trying to entrap them. If you don't belive me, go to Youtube and look for court videos on Sovereign Citizens.

so does she just sit there and enjoy the show, or what?

Freiren knows it’s a mimic 99.9% of the time, but hopes it’s a grimoire. And can get out herself, but it’ll “mess up her hair”

Lol this was actually my favorite skit from the whole show! Also the whole show is wonderful
