.

I have chronic nightmares. When I go to sleep, I presume it’s going to be a nightmare. I’m not always right, but I usually am. The nightmares are typically based on historical events.

► I cannot even begin to count the amount of times that I’ve died on the Titanic.

► I’ve slowly drifted on a boat through the flooded New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, bodies floating around me. I’ve also been left behind at Memorial Hospital, incapacitated in a hospital bed in the dark, left to die.

► I’ve stood right in front of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, while that massive wave barreled towards the shore. I looked up at the wave, and understood there was no escaping my fate. It would come, and I would die. The wave would crash over me, and I’d wake up.

► I’ve witnessed Ted Bundy murder people. I don’t want to elaborate, but I hate those dreams so much.

► I’ve attended executions. The room was dimly lit, and disturbingly quiet. It was the kind of silence that feels heavy and foreboding. The condemned was stuck with a needle, and slowly died right in front of my eyes. The monitor would flatline, and things would fade to black.

.

It’s almost 2am, and I’m struggling go to sleep, despite being on 600mg of Seroquel. Normally I’m good, but something about having the first dream of the New Year is making me feel superstitious. I don’t know if it’s an omen of things to come.

This is especially absurdly irrational because it’s not like the already sunk Titanic can sink again. People who have already die can’t die again. Past Natural disasters can’t suddenly reappear and wreak havoc.

And yet, I always get this bad feeling that I can’t explain. I feel like I’m counting sheep on Elm Street, fighting sleep due to a nonexistent clairvoyance. I’m a superstitious idiot.

I'm actually quite a fan of nightmares now. I've been on so many steroids my entire life, they're a given. At least they're... interesting.

Though... violently attack loved ones and graphic zoosadism dreams still ruin my day. I sleep to pokemon nuzlockes now, no shame.

I’m trying to learn how to control my more realistic/lucid dreams. It’s been a battle with my subconscious.

Superpowers. Etc. I’m even able to break free from sleep paralysis now. I feel like this is a skill I can teach in a few weeks of lectures.

Nightmares are not prophecy, they are your brain processing past experience.

Yep! One of my psychology teachers explained how dreams can be the brain processing emotions and experiences - especially with PTSD patients

They are, not can be. Nightmares are just dreams. How we interpret them when we wake is what makes them a dream or a nightmare

Odd that a superstitious person who expects to have nightmares has nightmares, I wonder what could be causing that?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That part isn’t prophetic. When you have nightmares 6-7 days a week,y you’re 98% most likely to have a nightmare. You come to expect it.

That must suck, I hope you find a solution. It’s tough since the lack of sleep probably increases the chance of having nightmares.

3,000 years ago, you would have been an oracle. Kings would have gone to war based on your dreams.

I’d be the most useless oracle ever lol! “I dreamt that I died in a historical event where everyone died.”

The time of Olive the Oracle were known as "the most peaceful in human history".

Nah, we all have different responses to our dreams. I’m so used to the nightmares that they don’t horrify me like they used to.

I like listening to brown noise.

I’ve tried all sorts of background noises to no avail. In fact, the noises then get incorporated into the nightmare, which is great.

It might help to listen to something while you sleep, like a TV show or audio book. Loud enough to hear, but not keep you awake. It might be

I appreciate all of the advice, but usually the outer voices conform to the nightmare. But thank you for suggesting it anyway!

Sleep Cove. I fuckin love that podcast. Puts me out every night.

Just enough so that the storyline gets incorporated into your dreams so they don't become nightmares as frequently.

Maybe some ASMR videos. It's not my thing, but people say it helps them sleep. e.g., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAGJ8lYl_5E

I grew up with Night Terrors, believe it or not listening to Love Line (back when it was Adam and Drew) cured them.
