The input and output capacitors are optional except when the signals aren't centered on 0 V. Choice of diode allows for the distortion level to be changed relative to the signal level: e.g Schottky diodes for smaller signals, LEDs for larger signals. Won't work directly from a guitar signal; it needs to be amplified first since there are no diodes with a forward voltages low enough (≈50 mV).
