Yay???

Jan 18, 2022 11:16 PM

Born with backward facing shallow shoulder socket. Always been able to dislocate my shoulder. Amazing party trick and I can get out of a straight jacket!.
Tore my labrum at work a week before Thanksgiving. Finally getting surgery tomorrow. Spent years as an over the counter speed freak (caffeine, energy drinks, vivarin). Then the past 3 years as a functional alcoholic. Never been put under before. Dont go to the doctor regularly. I know whatever happens is due to my neglect, but it's terrifying to think this could be my last 14 hours to do anything!

Tl/Dr getting first real surgery tomorrow, afraid past neglect will be my end

Edit: thanks for all the support and humor. Love this community. I'll keep you posted

Don’t lie or gloss anything over to your anesthesiologist.

I've always been 100% honest with my docs. They can't treat what they don't know

Anesthesia related death is more related to allergy to the drug. I don’t know you at all but I’m sure someone much older and less healthy

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Than you have had a more serious surgery and made it through. might want to get an 8 ball and hit the strip club, just in case though.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, I mean, you won't have a shoulder issue anymore then.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ha! I spit my drink out reading that. Totally needed it

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've had 23 surgeries in the last 5 years. If caffeine and alcohol were that problematic, I wouldn't be typing this right now.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's your job to try to scare the anesthesia team before they put you on your trip. It's their job to make sure your ticket is two-way.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh my god that's the best philosophy! Make them earn their buck!

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's gotten my husband through a couple general anesthetics lately, and he's a mess. I stand by it. They'll be cool.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On a slightly more serious note. Doctors will go extremely far to keep your ass alive, best thing you can do is just trust them.

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I totally do. They went to school for this shit and imgur has taught me out doesn't matter the pay, they care

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not like I didn't think that before.... But they're leaving the field now and I don't blame them

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

For fun try to stay awake as long as you can when they put the anesthesia in. I made it like 5 seconds haha

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn’t they do a pre op health test?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just blood work

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They work on people waay more fucked up than you, you’ll be fine :)

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Getting shoulder surgery? Big flex.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just tell them the honest truth and they can take care of ya. Huzzah! I’m excited for you.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They might have to use more anesthesia, but you'll be fine.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How old are you? Unless you are over 60 I wouldn't worry too much. I've been under many times.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

38.I know plenty of ppl who've done worse that have gone under.i just have horrible luck and work with "expect the worst, hope for the best

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

38 is the new 25. You'll be fine. I was out for a surgery at 37-38 and I find it unlikely you've neglected your health as much as I have.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope not, but if so it helps me feel better

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Labral tear surgery ain’t to bad, had both shoulders done the same year. Honestly the worst was waking up and they had the waist 1/2

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Way to tight. Recovery wasn’t bad just gotta be careful about movement and not picking up anything with that arm for a long while

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Be sincere with doctor/anesthesiologist about your habits. They know better. You'll be fine.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a doc I would ask how you pre op tests went? Is ur surgeon aware of your alcohol dependency? Have you been cutting down towards the day

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Of the surgery and I mean substantial cut of al. Also if anything for dependency issue the risk lies in withdrawal after the surgery

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not the procedure itself.if ur doc ok’d it there is nothing 2 worry about coz these stuff are well done by d book & more imp career killers.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You will be fine.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Funny you should say this. My dad needs the same surgery. Found out a week b4 thanksgiving that he can’t have it cause he will indeed 1/2

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Die on the table because years of abusing his heart with random otc shit, steroids, and binge alcohol he is now in heart failure. 2/3

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I meant 2/2 shit

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Either way the shoulder won’t bother you anymore

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

red is rad blue is bad

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 3

Not sure it's wrong either way the more I think about it

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Make sure you’re honest with your Anaesthetic Doc. You’ll be fine, they’ll make the necessary adjustments.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have been put under 5 times. It’s scary each time. But you’ll be under and out of surgery before you know it. You’ll do great!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've heard of alcohol abuse, but never caffeine abuse. How would you define that?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Prolly high volume consumption of energy drinks (6+/day?) and coffee? Maybe 3-4 "5 Hour Energy" for breakfast? Caffeine is a helluva drug.

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On top of constantly drinking energy drinks, coffee, cola, caffeinated water (it was a brief thing!)& ch-ch-ch-ch ch-ch-ch-ch-cherry bombs!

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Popping 6 vivarin (200mg caffeine pills) and chugging a jolt before 9am gym class. Pulse was through the roof

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think if you were bad enough that anesthesia would off you, you’d know already, or at least the doctors would

If they offer pee in a bottle, RUN

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*RUN AWAY!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know it's unfounded, just first time jitters

3 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I was super nervous on my first surgery that my blood pressure was super high. I had to quit smoking before I could do it. You'll be fine!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Keep us posted (you’ll be fine - jitters are normal)

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wife had same worries. Woke up and did not even know if surgery was done. You will be just fine!

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had the same issue, same problems that made me worry, im typing this now .

3 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought I could be awake for Moh's Micrographic surgery when I had skin cancer removed from my face. First needle to freeze me hit 1/?

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a nerve and I nearly jumped out of the chair. Woke up few hours later all done. Had a good anesthesiologist who knew I wouldn't manage 2/3

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

any more needless in the face.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But fuck the 8 needless I got in my nose when I had a second batch removed. Body hell that sucked.
