Customer states that heat alarms keep triggering randomly

Put a HEPA in your server room. Don't smoke in there, either.

A friend was having computer problems when I was in high school, it kept shutting off, thats what the entire inside of the pc looked like.

My husband's in HVAC, a lot of the time the AC stops working because.... the person forgot to change the batteries in the thermostat.

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did I see some connection details etched in the chassis? Was that IP and user/pass?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a Verizon-provided router for terminating "business" grade fibre connections, so probably an IPv4 address but these things are generally static, no user/pass needed. Souce, I had one in a Texas DC about 7 years ago.

That will be $300 please

They are paying for his knowledge, not his labor.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's the first one of those I've seen with a filter, usually they are completely unfiltered so the dust can cover all of the components inside. It does make for a great dust cloud when you open up the case and blow it off (preferably outside)

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Still may not be a bad idea to do that

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

All the server rooms I worked in had positive pressure to help blow dust out of the room, I thought that that was a common practice. Does anyone know otherwise?

Heat monitoring and basic cleaning.....

Back in the 90s, my state office got a bunch of PCs from the lowest bidder. No two the same. Friend's heat alarm kept going off because the CPU fan was cutting out. After a week, the bidder came around and fixed it. They turned off the alarm. Yes, the PC overheated in a few days, and the bidder had to replace the CPU instead of the much cheaper fan.

Like hearing someone breathe again after they declog their nose

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why would they need a HEPA, they built an air filter right into their server!

8 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

#1 mmmm. The PowerPint. I work in networking and this is the best tool to have in your pocket for so many things. In addition a pocket screwdriver that takes full size 1/4" bits.

You put that back right now! That was the IT guys chance for a break!

Look at me, I'm the IT guy now.

8 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Easy money.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Who the fuck is smoking in the server room?!

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

It tends to be fibers from clothing, hair and a considerable amount of skin. XD

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's like the IT version of a Noxzema strip.

8 months ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

I love the sound of relief the fan makes after it's removed.

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

This thing could be such good pr0n if it showed the temps starting to drop, and the fan pitching lower as the system was cleansed, purged, lavaged by good, cool air.

Also high-resolution, high-FPS of someone going through and air blasting the machines, showing the dust being blasted outside, and then the machines purring oh-so-quietly afterwards, cool and efficient.

A customer was installing fans and air filters in their server room, to protect it during the construction they put a tarp over it and wondered why it crashed

I used to work for a hotel chain where owners would, with some regularity, renovate their lobby / reception and choose to build the check-in / POS computers *into* the cabinets so they're "out of the way". Totally closed off with millimeters of clearance. Yeah can't imagine why you're having trouble.

8 months ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

I was responsible for protecting a server during a construction project. " Please keep your plastic closed, I'm so boned if you break this"

Worked on a job where a server rack that was on got covered by a plastic tarp by painters, totally sealed in. I tore a hole in the top and bottom and called my boss and the owners were able to shut it down remotely.

8 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Hey the painters were just trying to not fuck shit up. Not their job to understand thermal management. Should have been discussed and planned for ahead of time by whomever is managing the facility/IT.

8 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Plan ahead?? LOL

8 months ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Had a job where we did the same thing

We just also ran a duct hose into there too

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What should you do in that situation? Is the correct answer that you need to renovate during downtime?

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You took the filter off. Now it is going to get dirty inside.

Took over support at a plastic thread factory. Found an IBM ps1 controlling a machine. It has a good inch of plastic dust on the motherboard. When I peeled it off, I had a mold of the motherboard. Crazy that thing still worked.

8 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

As a school custodian, I got the bright idea to use a leaf blower to clean out the tech closet of dust.
So..much..dust. Set off the fire alarm. Lol

Big fan of the audible change as soon as it's removed

8 months ago | Likes 72 Dislikes 1

It still doesnt sound great..

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's like it suddenly took a puff of an inhaler.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You made me unmute. Thank you. Poor thing was in agony.

8 months ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

It's a small fan.

8 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Sound is diegetic, but much louder than you might think. It serves to highlight the effects of what's going on, but you still might not care for loud whirring fan noises.

diegetic

Background noise can be 100% diegetic, but incidental to the content as shown. The sound of an idling truck, for instance, can be both completely realistic to what's being recorded, but nothing more than an annoyance to the point of the video.

Here the sound doesn't just showcase what a server room sounds like, but how unplugging a vent has an audible impact on that sound. If there wasn't a fan behind that vent, then the sound would go unchanged. In short, you can see 𝙖𝙣𝙙 hear the difference.

In this instance...? Eh... No one markets their cooling fans as, "louder! more shrill than the competitors!" In this case, it's pretty normal to find blaring industrial humming unpleasant.

The point is the sound plays a direct role in the video that the video alone couldn't achieve. In silence, that may as well just be a passive vent that's blocked, not a fan exhaust. With the sound, you can hear the difference, resulting in greater clarity and impact than the video on mute.

The sound isn't just "what's happening" - it's necessary to fully appreciate what's happening. You get more of the video's point by listening to it than by not.

You took off the muffler

8 months ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

Air filter, not muffler.

8 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

It deadened the sound. Went from air filter to muffler.

Wouldn't it be good to have a vacuum near there?

8 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You'd think an exhaust fan would be a good idea if you do this inside...

8 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This is likely from a fire.

You should also disconnect fans when doing this. Spinning them makes a voltage that can damage other components.

8 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Damn.. all these years I kept making them spin fast with my air flow just for fun... I might have generated enough voltage to actually power my entire building for a week or two. Shame on me.

Why is a PC worth repairing when it requires a full-face respirator mask in order to safely clean the dried cat urea powder without inhaling? Why not just throw it in the trash and buy a new one? Seems easier.

8 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

A few reasons, data recovery, parts reuse, cleaning after a fire, or because it costs a lot of money, some PC can be upwards of five thousand £/€/$ whatever, so a mask is cheaper than it. Also that appears to be a machine shop judging by the wall mounted thing, so very likely that's set up specifically to run some machine, possibly using control software that can't run on modern hardware and/or software, making this a minor hassle vs making a new rig for one job. That would also explain the dust

8 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've literally removed enough cat fur from some home PCs to make another cat. Big, wads of it. Made me wonder if a cat died in there & fur was all that was left.

8 months ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I have removed enough cat fur to make another cat just by brushing one.
