An akaname, or “filth-licker” is a strange creature from Japanese folklore. It is a humanoid creature with one sharp claw on each foot and a long tongue, which it uses to lick the filth out of public bath houses after the people have left (although sometimes it interrupts a frightened bather). Though frightening in appearance, they are not evil or malicious.

(image from “Hyakushu Kaibutsu Yōkai Sugoroku” by Utagawa Yoshikazu)

“Aka” or “filth” is a homonym for “red” in Japanese, so the creature is often (but not always) portrayed with a red skin. The Pokémon Lickytung also appears to be based on this monster.

Also note that it isn't always depicted with its trademark single toenail, such as in this image where it has three claws on each foot.

Source: the Gazu Hyakki Yagyo from Toriyama Sekien, I personally read the “Japandemonium” translation by Hiroko Yoda and Matt Alt

My favourite Japanese yokai is the makuragaeshi who puts your pillow near your feet while you’re sleeping. What a dick thing to do

3 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That fucker.

While I absolutely love that tongue and the general appearance, I am definitely concerned about hygiene.

Someone came up with this after seeing their kid lick the toilet

I love yokai. So many of them are just utterly random. Like this one, or the Azuki arai that washes beans.

3 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

An umbrella that became sentient because it got old. Or a spider cow... because why not?

^This guy gets it!

You telling me even pre WW2 Japan had weird shit in their art?

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Always have. Just look up Jōmon era pottery figures.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Oh yes, Japanese folklore is full of weird shit (and I love it!)

The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife was made in 1814. Feel free to look it up. Preferably outside of a work environment.

I wonder if it has any relation to the Russian Domovoi?

3 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Go on then?

3 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I doubt it. Japanese folklore became insanely insular, and despite both countries being neighbors, the domovoi dates back to before Russia-

Expanded past the Ural.

I made a post about that one on day 144!

Also related, perhaps, the Germanic Hinzelmann ?

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It’s also said that their saliva is toxic and causes bad things to happen to those who come in contact with it.

3 years ago | Likes 110 Dislikes 0

Well there went my plan.

3 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Oooooohhhhh… so that’s what my Ex is…

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Causes bad things to happen" is kind of an euphemism for toxic, no?

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Obviously to scare children into tidying up

3 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 0

I'm pretty sure that's what half of these mythical creatures are. The other half are to terrify you into not doing stupid shit.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

like how polar bears and sharks are in the off limits zones of earth

As a Japanese,

Modern versions don't really have that effect. Kinda the opposite, really.

1-This is one of the reasons I love the video game series Yo Kai Watch.

2-It’s like pokemon but instead of catching little creatures you make friends with Japanese spirits.

I played phasmo I saw my friends die to a yokai, Harmless my ass. /s

In Japanese folklore, there’s a character called “Kappa” who is bald, eats cucumbers and has three bum holes. True story.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's actually a species rather than a single character! There are multiple Kappa, they are aquatic monsters

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And is the inspiration for Golduck

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So it’s just a Belle Delphine simp?

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You... You're not wrong

Philippines has an incredible array of mythical creatures. One has a long proboscis that sucks babies from a pregnant woman's womb

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Is that where the ghost/vampire thing that's a floating head with entrails dangling from it is from, too?

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The manananggal, yes! That one does originate from the Philippines, but there are regional variants of the story, such as the Krasue:

"Could be seen walking along dark trails and lonely paths without her head, hands or feet, because her work was to frighten people to death"

3 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I want to see a cryptid. Or a ghost. Just something spooky one time. I have spooky fomo.

3 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

Saving a piece of your meal and putting it out by your back door or garden gate is said to attract fae

3 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

Or raccoons. Or other wildlife, depending on where you live. But at least it may be a bit spooky.

3 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nice try, hungry woodland creature.

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pro tip: Do not attract the Fae.

3 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

As someone who researched and wrote over 200 posts about mythological creatures, I can confirm that attracting the fae is seldom a good idea

3 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Do not do this. This is how you attract vermin which carry things that you don't want to catch. It's a ticket in my town if you're caught.

3 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

On the other hand, if you DON'T leave certain food in certain places they get upset and mess with things.
