Day # whatever of me trying to change people’s minds about spiders

Jul 13, 2025 3:04 PM

Guyssss I GOT FIFI ON FILM! It’s fascinating to watch- she holds herself with one leg (!!), uses her front legs to hold the net, and her back legs to wrap it. Fifi will then inject venom, liquifying her prey from the inside out to sip it like a disgusting slurpy.

A lot of you want a “challenge to like” spider instead of just my cutesy jumpers. Fifi fits the bill! She’s a Cameroon ogre-faced spider :)

Maybe if the arachnophobes watched the human process of slaughtering and butchering animals it wouldn't bother them so much? Just saying...

I mean… you’ve got a point.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank god for the relatively low oxygen levels and the square-cube law or we'd all be lunch. Cool spiders, tho. The jumpy ones are my fave!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The jumpers will always be my favorite but these are a really cool addition :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fifi is so adorable!! :) Enjoy your meal Fifi

1 month ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

I think she is too! They’re so elegant compared to the little muppets that are jumpers lol

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

........ fuck.

Yeah, your jumpers are cute. But this?

Nope. No can do. You have fun, I'll be over here cowering in the corner.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There’s no need to cower in a corner with these guys. In fact, you’re much more likely to get jumped on or up close and personal with a jumping spider than an ogre face. They’re incredibly shy and hide unless they’re hunting.

It’s silly to be afraid of the exact same creature just because it looks a little different don’t you think?

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Of course it's silly. And I know jumpers are more gregarious.

But it's called an irrational fear for a reason.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She is adorable!!! She looks akin to the daddy long legs I have in the house. <3

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

She’s fascinating to watch. I haven’t handled her though

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Absolutely fascinating! Just curious, what would happen if Fifi were to bite a human?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They’re incredibly shy, so it’s unlikely they’d bite at all. If she were to bite me, I *might* have a slight reaction like a mosquito bite

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She is beautiful, and I like her enclosure too.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thank you! It’s a mix of bioactive and artificial :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I found that my dislike for spiders made me cope by learning to love them, they are wonderful but scary creatures.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I prefer “beautifully intimidating” :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m a huge arachnophobe but I’ve actually started to come around with the jumping spiders but Fifi is a huge NOPE for me. She’s scary. Here’s how scared of spiders I am. I once jumped out of a moving car because a spider dropped down from the rear view mirror. I opened the door and jumped out. I was the driver. The other people in the car with me were pretty pissed off

1 month ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 3

I’m proud of you for trying!!! And being okay with the jumpers is a huge step!

1 month ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point of holding one (a huge part of it for me is I can’t stand the feeling of them crawling on me. I can’t stand insects either) but I think the jumpers are actually pretty damn cute and quite interesting to learn about. I actually look forward to your posts so thank you!

1 month ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Thanks YOU for giving them a chance! I’m glad to help you get better about a fear :) I think most people are freaked to hold a spider tbh I was until I held my first tarantula about 5 years ago. I’ve been hooked since!

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I usually don't have issues with spiders and like your jumping spider posts, but Fifi is giving me the creeps.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Fifi is different and might not be as cute, but still a very key component to a healthy ecosystem! :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Oh, there are numerous components of a healthy ecosystem that give me the creeps, sometimes even an itch or an infection. They are okay, but I prefer to stay away and hope they do too.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Gratz on finally catching it.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Took her a sec 😂

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a big defender of arachnids, but I'm not 100% sure showing one doing what most people who are afraid of spiders find as nightmare fuel is the best way of promoting them... Maybe a video of Fifi with a little top hat and cane doing a Broadway number or doing a standup routine at a tiny spider nightclub...?... Just throwing out ideas... they may not be practical.

1 month ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 4

1. Not practical
2. If you’d check my page or read the caption, you’d know that a) my focus is on cutesy jumping spiders and b) my followers have been asking for something more intimidating as they’re working their ways through learning that spiders are nothing to be afraid of.

1 month ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

Yeah, I read the whole thing... I comment on your posts occasionally and was just making a joke... I even went out to my workshop and looked for Bert, one of the many fashionably dressed spiders that live there... and photographed him wearing his Sunday top hat to help show people that spiders are people too... tiny carnivorous eight legged people who make webs... but people nonetheless... sort of.

1 month ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

LOL this is actually awesome! 10/10 would like to see more fancy hat spiders.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't it more a hereditary / genetic thing to not like spider. Like, it's nothing personal Mr Spider but cave man brain says flee, flee for your lives :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually no- spiders pose very little threat to humans and therefore it’s not an innate fear but rather a learned one. In many cultures spiders are considered lucky or even sacred :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Our first natural reaction to spiders etc is to be wary of them, which makes a lot of sense, but you can get past that with a little practice. Same as dealing with heights and loud noises. Anxiety can make these things uncomfortable to deal with though, so be patient with people. Also Australians probably should keep a bit of that fear for safety reasons. They banned an episode of Peppa Pig for that.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I also have an ingrain fear of Austrailia :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Australians also have the coolest species of jumping spiders though

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I used to be scared of spiders but I got a tarantula (Harriet) and studied them. Realised I shouldn’t keep one as a pet and she was rehomed in the perfect sanctuary - she is still going strong 15 years later!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m glad you both got over a fear AND did what’s best for your baby!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As long as spooders stay away from me we cool. They can eat all the damn mosquitoes they want. But I don't ever want to touch one

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s fair! I’ll take it lol

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...Yep, can confirm that Fifi is more intimidating than your jumping friends. But, she seems like the kind of spider who sticks to her web? Like an orb weaver maybe?

1 month ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 5

/gallery/day-whatever-of-me-trying-to-change-people-s-minds-about-spiders-d9U3WgD

Here’s what a net-casting spider looks like on the hunt!

1 month ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Haha yes she’s a little more intimidating but SO COOL!

And good inference, but nope! Orb weavers use a web to catch prey and typically live in it. Fifi is a net-casting spider. I’ll link my last post showing what her hunting pose is! When she isn’t actively hunting, she’s flat up against her tree hiding.

1 month ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 3

I imagine they'd need a larger enclosure but have you ever thought of getting an orb weaver? They are beautiful

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I’d LOVE to have an orb weaver, but I have no idea how one would properly house one. I’m sure there are smaller varieties… now imma go down a rabbit hole and see if anyone does keep them! There’s all sorts of species kept including black widows and brown recluses, but they don’t need the same space

This is my fucking PET. How about I threaten to run yours over with a car??? Block the spider tag and scroll past you miserable fucking sadist

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It’s a joke and a very common trope, enjoy cuddling your pet

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It’s not a joke- it’s threatening, immature, and in no way funny. It’s a disgusting sentiment, not a trope.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

This is obviously your first day on the internet

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

No, you’re just a jackass :)))

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love spiders. I think they're lucky.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree! I was always taught that growing up :)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope.

1 month ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

Block the spider tag and scroll past.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm kidding, really. The post is interesting.

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If you’re interested then why be contrite? It makes no sense

Or maybe it’s my tism showing idk.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Holy shit...take it easy, ok?

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Or just don’t be an ass for no reason? Like my dude this is on you.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

People are pretty tired of negativity under the guise of "kidding" or "jokes"

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it's because for a while on the internet it was trendy to call spiders "nopes." Probably they were just referencing that as a kind of a joke.

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m over mean, ignorant, or inflammatory retorts being under the guise of “just kidding.”

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I had a ('wild') cellar spider in my apt trying this with a large crane fly and she lost grip and they both fell like 6 feet. I gave the fly back to her b/c it was still wriggling (but at that point they're impossible to extricate even if I wanted to rescue it), and I felt bad letting it go to waste, and she DROPPED IT AGAIN. Absolute idiot. I had to give it to another spider.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Not all of the species are particularly bright (cue most tarantulas lol)

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cellar/Cobweb spider? Leggy as heck? Defense mechanism is to wobble around like crazy? They're so silly. lol

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah! Aka vibrating spiders lol. But they're "ranged" attackers in the spider meta. Spiders have a lot of different hunting methods but cellar spiders are REALLY effective spider-killers because they will circle prey in their webs butt-first while using their hind legs to fling web around it. Jumpers can target them with their eyesight and kill them before they can do this, but most other spiders--even HUGE ones--fall prey to them.

1 month ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The funnel web spiders in the garden might just be their buffet then. :D

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She's a real looker:

1 month ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Ohhh do you have one too?! I love their faces so much!

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sadly not, it's yours rotated :)

One troll is downvoting every single comment in this post.
If you don't like spiders, just go away. Nobody expects you to stay against your will!

1 month ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 8

I assume that's when someone makes a comment and downvotes all the others so their comment is at the top. Might be wrong but that's my assumption when I see a cluster of 0 comments that are otherwise normal. I always upvote them back to 1

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Which is so stupid. How desperate do you have to be to try to cheat your way to top comment? It’s fucking comical

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I do, they gotta stay even if they dont want to.

1 month ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Id use a torch tbh

1 month ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Urgh. There’s always one isn’t there? I’ll take downvotes over “kill it” comments.

1 month ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 3

I will go and upvote every top-level comment to counteract.

Except Lew4731.

1 month ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I upvoted everyone to balance it out

1 month ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Yeah if i see this happening on a post i try to go through and give everyone a one up. Thnx for beating me to it i guess :).
