DIY Advice for removing a 4x4 support

Aug 10, 2023 5:03 AM

Pulled up a deck a couple years ago but struggled to find a good way to remove the support posts. I had a pick axe on hand and had an idea. Drilled a 1/2 hole about half way through.

After drilling the hole, used some leverage to fight against 20 years of being in the ground.

Brick added for more leverage. Drilled more holes as needed….I broke this handle being overzealous and had to buy a new one

Success! You can see the series of holes drilled to pull the post from the hole. I got lucky and it broke free easily from the concrete footing

A sledgehammer to each side, alternating, would have wobbled the post and widened the hole.

Bolt a scrap board to the post, lift it up with a pair of jacks. I use 10 ton screw jacks, but a car jack should do in a pinch. Usually I loosen up the edge of the concrete footer/dirt with a pick or spudbar first. Oh, and put the jacks on a wide boards or you'll drive them into the ground
