Crazy that they kept the tree, and I mean that in a good way. Elsewhere, they bulldoze them even if it's sacred (efforts to save the Djab Wurrung tree were unsuccessful). https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-54700074
If the ground is Completly capped off, moisture will have a hard time getting to thoes roots. A large amount of what would soak into the ground is instead diverted to gutters and taken away.
I'm actually surprised that this tree is still standing. Not because of the road. Because of the fort it sits next to. You don't let trees grow outside the walls of your fort, because you don't want the enemy to use them to climb over your walls.
There's a tree like that in my home town, and it was always fun giving tourists directions. "Yeah, go down there until you see the big tree". "How will I know which tree that is?". "Don't worry, you'll know"
the leaves and branches funnel rain water down to the trunk and then down onto the base, the rest is via the root system and hopefully some irrigation from the city.
It’s a bit more complicated than that. Urban soils such as this one surrounded by pavement can cause many problems with root development and water/nutrient uptake. For example, Heavily compacted soils restrict proper root development, and water runs off the pavement instead of absorbing into the soil (just to mention a few issues urban trees run into)
That tree was obviously there before the road. The route system was already developed, and probably goes quite deep. It's probably also poking into the drainage system. Roots will go through concrete if they have to, it just takes time.
Despite popular belief, absorbing roots (the ones responsible for water uptake) are found just under the surface of the soil as they are as much responsible for oxygen uptake as the leaves are. Roots can also suffocate and die due to Lack of oxygen. Construction/human activities (such as installing new roads) also damaged existing root systems which can stress the tree.
In the Philippines driving is interesting when on a double line road the outer lane can often have a tree in it meaning careful overtaking only. Then beyond dogs and cats frequently crossing the road there are also random obstructions and that double lane road can turn single then double again. Then street lights and cats eyes are quite varied with no fixed policy.
That's how a girl I knew died in high school. Still remember seeing the tree with all the bark missing from where the car wrapped around it. I forget exactly how fast she was going but it was freeway speeds on a residential side street. Parents were always too busy being rich assholes to parent her and that was the outcome.
I feel like a low amount. It is a very obvious obstacle on what seems to be a tiny little road. Also, it's probably older than cars by a century or so. Maybe several. Idk just riffin here

Clearly it has to be getting moisture somehow... But with every thing covered in concrete, I don't know how!

Yes! Build around them! Don't like it? Go explore the surface of the sun and leave Earth's environment alone.

Don't mess with the trees?
Wait until you hear about the rain forests.

Drives on the right side of the road, European plates, near water, and walls are well maintained. Im going to guess Croatia, but I'm spitballing

I'm from Croatia and don't know about this tree, but I know the one on the way to Lubenice on Cres island.

Looks like this clip originates from the People's Daily (China's newspaper) twitter account. Didn't mention a precise location.

Cooool! But how does the tree get enough water?

Yup... Could not explain it better.

Also drunks peeing on it.

Usually roots, but doesn’t all the pavement and gutter system meant to keep the street clear also block the water from getting to the roots?
OookOookOookMotherFudger
"Usually". LOL. It's the only way it's getting enough water... The roots have probably extended into the drainage system anyway.

Some trees are protected species where you are not allowed to cut them down.

Very much so

Who needs drunk-driving laws when you have a tree to solve the problem?
