My dad got a similar one. Fired it up just to test power/connection/etc after unboxing, and it immediately launched up into an awning and tumbled into the pool.
The drone just slipped, the guy manipulated it in such a way that it couldn't hold itself in that position. I didn't see anything specifically stupid about it.
Drone instructions specify how to launch them and it includes not holding or holding on while the motors are armed. The instructions usually even include this as what might happen if you break that rule.
fun facts: Propellers can inflict severe, devastating injuries that result in death, loss of extremities, severe permanent deformity, disfigurement and/or disability.
this is why part 107 exists and why all th3 hobbyists got super pissed when you could just go to best buy, nab a phantom, and light it up in the parking lot. these shitheels ruined it for us all
Pretty sure a Phantom would cut power to the rotors the moment it flipped over. (My Spark does, just grab it out of the air and flip it over. Tonic immobility lol.)
So many, sometimes nonsensical or counterintuitive, regulations and limitations were suddenly imposed on not only drone enthusiasts, but all RC hobbyists all around the world, just because some mouthbreathers thought it would be funny to sent their DJIs into airports and other restricted air spaces. Just thinking about it makes my blood boil.
back before facebook melted down, there was a rotor riot group i was in (remember those guys?) and ROUTINELY there would be one or two complete dipshits doing absurd things like flying over commercial jetliners as they were landing - and of course someone in the group would report them to the fcc. so the place devovled into asshats and narcs and it got absurd fast. and i dont imagine its gotten better since
Never were on facebook, except briefly during university because the "fellow kids" demanded groups and projects to be on there. But rotor riot? Man, that's a name I haven't heard in a while. Still have a 3D printed tx gimbal guard with their logo. Good times, friend. Good times.
In that case, may I recommend the Radiomaster tx16s with EdgeTX? It's a relativly affordable, reliable tramsmitter and compatible with almost all recievers, except for futabas fasst protocol. Had mine for a couple of years now and it never let me down.

Are we demonstrating how not to use a drone?

You know, sometimes you just have to let go.
Zioxyl
Those propellers are fast. If they were any bigger, theyd cut his arm.

aren't you supposed to let go of it?

Life is hard. But it's harder when you're stupid.

That brought a smile.

You are mean 😄
MioTaalas
What about large open area with nothing close by and start with t REMOTELY since you know, you have a remote to control it....
No?
Ok, break a leg then...
sniggly5212
As a drone hobbyist, I know he is ignoring advice he's gotten several times. He deserves everything he got and I'm glad he didn't hurt anyone else.
Fulustreka
You seem mean.
sniggly5212
Responsible drone pilots are mean to those who make a bad name forcya and encourage the government to add regulations.
StormBurnX
Perhaps, but they're also right. The instructions are full of "don't be stupid" warnings specifically because of people like the video.
Fulustreka

I guess he was not trying to launch it, lol. Just hanging!
SandwichRGood
He held on to it as he tried to make it fly higher, placed it propeller-side down, and held his arm between the blades as it was spinning

How on earth is that a "fun" fact ? True fact they also "cant"..... Fact.. cutlery is in the same category and yet we all have it at home.....

CrackWhoresAndCheese
He is lucky it wasn't fully revved up, it probably would have cut him. He saved the drone by keeping his cool. Can't say the same for his dinner.
wadatahmydamie
Those cuts *hurt* too
hsalonen3000
I also have beer for dinner sometimes.
NotusPanda
Also "saved his drone", apart from the pieces which flew separately from then on..
CrackWhoresAndCheese
New blades are cheap and easy to replace. That is not real damage.
murd0c1
It did cut him. You can see his arm starting to bleed at the end.

Oh I have a friend that did that with a home built one. He required many stitches haha.
