So, I went looking for a new place to try fishing today, and ended up exploring Fort Howard. Never been there before. Ultimately I'm glad I went. There's a lot of history here I did not know about, and there was so much stuff to either climb on or walk around that I felt 10 years younger doing it.

Wish they had some life-sized mock-ups of these guns still in position. It would certainly show the sheer scale of it all.

20 years ago, I would've easily have climbed in there.

That is not a floor. That appears to be some thick muck filling the room to the point where you can't even see the floor.

Those were some BIG ASS GUNS.

There used to be four mortars set up in the middle of this. I can imagine a skateboarder trying to do a drop in on this and just completely wrecking himself on the bottom.

Curse these Gates. I wanna see what's inside.

I got back to looking for a good fishing spot and followed the shoreline. Eventually I started finding stone structures like this and a seawall.

I ended up finding what looks like an abandoned neighborhood. Clearly someone still cuts the grass around here, but it's completely devoid of people and all the houses are boarded up. Looks like a really nice area too. Turns out it's part of the Fort Howard veterans hospital, which was abandoned in the early 2000s.

I did some looking around, and I did find some buildings with doors I could get through, but I'm an adult and knew at any point I could be arrested for being in any of these places. Plus you never know if there's a homeless camp in one of these buildings and somebody freaks out cuz they're not expecting you to walk in.

Apparently, back in 2014 somebody set the hospital on fire. I really want to see what it looks like inside. If I had found this place in my younger days, I definitely would have been in this building by now.

Well ain't that reassuring.

I found a way in.

Didn't go too far, since I didn't know when or if someone else would show up.

There's still water flowing through here.

The floor is gone here, so I'm guessing that's part of the fire damage.

I might try coming back to this area to get some fishing in along that seawall, but I'm going to have to bring some gear that I don't have to drag behind me that whole distance. Safe to say I'm exhausted from that walk, but at least I had fun.

Nice! We've got a few just like it in Washington. They've cleaned up Fort Casey a bunch, reinstalled a couple of the big guns, and added electricity to some of the tunnels. It's awesome

I climbed up on top of a lot of that and had some really good opportunities for pictures, but I did not think of it at the time. This really was just supposed to be a scouting mission for fishing, but next thing I knew I'm climbing up stairs, going down in bunkers, walking into a fenced off abandoned hospital and it's abandoned neighborhood. Then I remembered Imgur was a thing, so I had to go back and take pictures of shit I missed. It's like a playground for adults.
