Fail: When installing the new shelves by myself, I use the ladder as a second set of hands. Too bad I only used half a brain

Help me step-bro, I'm stuck...

Hah! It happens to us all, don't worry. Luckily those just pop/hook together it looks like, so they should come undone again

Thankfully you can just tap it back out.

I wish you were right, but it's just one of those times where I got laser focused on the task at hand, and less so at the bigger picture.

And, I can't say I would have ever come up with such a dumb thing to stage as a fail, that kind of creativity is beyond me.

IKEA instructions?

Undo the screws for the lower corner on the left... and you should be able to slide the ladder out.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's different. Have seen the sliding stepladders in libraries, but never in a garage.

lol these funny little mistakes are so defeating when you are close to the finish line and tired. Been there many times with various projects!

"I thought we had one of those folding ladders?"

"No, we've always just had these two short aluminium ladders with hot-glue for feet on one end."

10 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You nailed it! Not to mention I was sweating buckets in the garage when I installed these since it was so hot, and all I wanted to do was put the finishing touches on it when I saw this.

just sawzall the top of the ladder off..

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Then you don’t have a top step, side cuts for the win

had 2 coworkers do this but with 15 runs of EMT through the middle handrail of a scissor lift! and it was at break time they realized it.

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No break time for you guys... lol

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are you by any chance related to that guy who welded his head into a railing?

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the storage rack's ladder now

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

May I suggest you stay away from welding?

10 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

You're afraid of my power!

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That rail slots in, it will take less than 30 seconds to recover the ladder

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well, at least they're press-fit.

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ive done this my fair share of times.

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Well .... now you have convenient access to your shelf storage.

I love this idea, I might have to bring it to market!

10 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

That would be a heck of a way to sell ladders. Just build the business around ladder distribution, just like how your shelf is built into your ladder….. it’s technically vertical integration, look up that term.

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

this would literally take 30 seconds to fix

"Ain't nobody got time fo' dat..!"

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Quite. Saferacks are made for DIY. They slide together quite easily.

Also come apart easily, which is why I refused to install them unless the customer opted for added bracing.

Yup grab the angle grinder, you’ve went to far you’ve already committed

10 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Yes, but it's 30 seconds of shame

10 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Ah, but 30 seconds of laughing at one's self. Because the fix is relatively easy. The ladder did the job for the 2nd pair of hands. 👍

10 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, no offense OP.

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I don’t think that’s the point, friend

10 months ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 1

Yea what 81licks said you dicklicker!

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Exactly. Just saw the top off the ladder

10 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Or saw through one of the struts

10 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In fact, I just realized you only need to saw through part of the ladder

10 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's true, but I was already tired, and that long section wasn't very flexible, so trying to pivot the ladder back and out was definitely a pain on my own

Pivot the ladder out? Just two taps on either side and that cross piece pops out.

10 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

This happened a while back, so I don't remember the thought process, but I think it was easier in my head to keep the cross piece anchored/attached on one side, as it was not the easiest to align on my own. And I was in no mood to disassemble more than needed.

Seeing how I got a ladder stuck in this position, I don't credit myself with having very good critical thinking at that point.

Sadly I can kinda relate. There are some situations I get myself into that a little extra effort could easily undo but I think I can get by with half the effort if things just line up right. They never do and it always turns into a mess.

I preach to my kids that "shortcuts never work", and that it usually saves time doing it right the first time. I should have taken my own advice here.
