The surprising decision by Justice Arthur F. Engoron is a major victory for Attorney General Letitia James in her lawsuit against Mr. Trump, effectively deciding that no trial was needed to determine that he had fraudulently secured favorable terms on loans and insurance deals.
- NYT
Now the trial just determines the size of the penalties he has to pay. The decision alone cancels business certificates allowing him to operate properties in New York

Good.

Wake me up when something actually happens to him.
GlenL
Of all the things he's been accused of, I can 100% guarantee that the only thing he's actually worried about is that people will find out he isn't rich
AshenLady
Yesssss. He couldn’t care less about classified-mishandled-felony-whateverTF. Expose his business as fraudulent tho? And that he ridiculously lies about his wealth? This is the case that matters to him. This one.

Why does it take the justice system so long to finally make a judgement on something so obvious that the public has known since the 1990s?

This matters. If the trump cartel was able to get off the hook it would set a precedent that anyone could lie on financial forms without penalties. Next up, state tax audits…
KamikazeGerbil101
Every bank, insurance company, and others will be suing him now !

But is it a felony?

Yes

What would it take in these legal proceedings (right word?) for him to not be allowed to run for 2024?
Fendeezy
Some state laws and constitutions bar felons from running for office, but that’s for state or local offices only.
JackingMeHoff
Confiscate and liquidate all of Trump real estate holdings including monies he illegally made from them. Make him penniless.

"surprising decision"?
WhichEndDoITypeIntoAgain
This was the judge's decision in response to James's request for summary judgment - so a surprise that the guilty determination came down on count 1 of 7, when trial is supposed to start next week. And it's a doozy of a decision - he loses all business licenses issued to himself or his companies named in the indictment, which covers nearly all of his marquee properties AFAIK. They're taking away his shit.

Trumps new campaign slogan. “Make Me Great Again!
SoberAndBored
What the Trump organisation does is buys a property, then takes out interest only loans against it. They pay the interest for the term of the loan, then they have to pay back the full value of the loan all in one go, when it comes due. They then use the money they borrowed to offset taxes (because they have debts) and to buy more property, then repeat the process. When the loan has been repaid, they just take out another loan against the property and repeat the process. As long as they can pay
SoberAndBored
when the loan comes due, everyone's happy. They make their profit from the difference between the income from the properties and the interest payments they have to make. But. They've been inventing the values of their properties, and changing them depending on who is asking. As usual, Trump blew his own defences by saying he was the one valuing the properties, and that they were worth whatever he said they were. Some of the ways he's lied are amazing: he said the penthouse of Trump Tower was 3
SoberAndBored
times as big as it really is. He had a valuation done on empty fields in Scotland next to one of his golf clubs, but the valuation was if they'd been fully developed with multimillion pound properties, and then as if 2500 smaller homes had been built on them. This gave empty fields in Scotland a value as $361.4 MILLION dollars. Oh, and the local council denied him planning permission for what he wanted, and the Trump Organisation did a valuation of what they would allow as anywhere between
SoberAndBored
$21 million and -$34 million - i.e. building what the council would let them build would cost $34 million more than they could then sell the property for, all the way up to they could sell the properties for $21 million more than it would cost to build them. How can a property company have a spread of $55 million ?

That "no trial needed" thing bothers me. Nobody, even this dirtbag, should be denied their day in court. That alone sounds like grounds for appeal.
scout27302
Why waste time and money on a trial when the proof of his fraudulent activities is in paperwork from his own companies. His lawyers have no reasonable arguments and he admits in sworn depositions that he was involved in the valuation of his properties. The evidence was reviewed by legal and financial experts. Writing down that the penthouse in rump tower is three times the size it actually is?! There is no question that the fraudster committed fraud. He and his enablers are guilty wretches.
AshenLady
IIRC, defendant requested a summary judgement be made. so this just landed butter side down for them.
badgesweedontneednostinkingbadges
OK, that's actually funny.

Funny thing, the evidence was so overwhelming that a jury trial was utterly pointless.

You know that doesn’t matter to his supporters. If it did we wouldn’t be in this mess.

SophieClockwise
This is literally how most "influencers" operate, often getting into massive debt filming themselves living pretend lifestyles they actually cannot afford, all in order to hopefully have people give them the money to enable them to do it for real.
Vergenbuurg
The cretin took his daddy's $400 million, and used it to *cosplay* as a billionaire for decades. When that ran out, he took dirty money from whoever was offering, mainly Russia, with a notable portion from China, as well. His efforts to fracture and destabilize America are part of him paying them back.

sadly, his cult has sent him millions to continue his lies.

Conning people is the only thing he's truly been successful at. It got him all the way to the oval office.

Don't get me wrong, the potential of a complete dissolution of the Trump organisation is tasty, but I want to see his ass in an orange jump suit that out-oranges his spray tan.
Feralkyn
I don't think we'll ever see that. The powers that be want him away from any chance to run at office but that's as far as it'll go--he'll be in a min. security white-collar prison or house arrest, if anything. He'll need to be a felon, or dead, not in gen. pop.
Totallynotarealbear
Oh wow he's being kicked out of New York only 49 other states for him to make money in, I'm sure this will completely humble and break him and he won't raise millions from his idiot cultists to "defend himself from the democrats witch hunt"
prfesser
It'll be a trifle difficult, moving "his" properties to Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, or any other bastion of wealth. The court would probably take notice of a tower being hauled thru the city.
graehall
New York was the central hub of his shady business and real estate empire, which is now being torn down and kicked out. This is bad for him
Feralkyn
