Tails look straight, shouldn’t they flair out?

Mark with knife (exacto or thin) then mark with pencil. Make sure you pare to correct side of line. Make deep to pare, plane or sand flush.

Poplar is kind of spongy and seldom get a great cut from it off the saw. anyway its first one do it thirty or forty more times you'll get it

My guess is lining up the boards when you’re scribing the pins (or the tails, if you cut pins first). A specific dovetail alignment board
Would help here, but so would just being super precise in lining them up. Second guess would be that your end grain isn’t square to edges.
A shooting board would help immensely (as would a hand plane if you aren’t already using one).
