Stacked 3x photo of an early grass fossil from the Fort Union Formation (~66-64 million years ago), Wyoming USA. Appx. 1.5cm long
#science_and_tech #science #fossils

Fossil is preserved in 3D with both halves present in a fine grained sandstone/siltstone. It is likely an early ancestor to modern wheat and rice. One of the earliest grasses on planet Earth, roughly the same age as the end of the dinosaurs!

Photo of modern wheatgrass, what seems to be the most likely modern analog. While it usually grows on plains today, the fossil plant would have lived in a tropical hot, wet and swampy environment. Much different than Wyoming today!

Better response than I thought! More to come soon (forgive the Fort Union posts, they are all I have access to away from home!)

Well, it can't be a coincidence. Grass killed the dinosaurs.
