Note: 50 years ago, Very few called it the confederate flag. It was generally referred to as the Rebel Flag. It was seen as representing rebellion. That’s a big reason why bands like Guns’n’roses used it.
Maybe it’s known as the rebel flag because most inbreds can’t spell confederate.
