Force-Directed 7 Point Star Graph

Nov 23, 2024 4:44 AM

Seven identical charged particles repel each other as they slide on a circular track. Friction eventually brings them to rest as the vertices of a regular heptagon. The lines drawn between them have no effect on the dynamics, but they make a regular 7-pointed star when the system comes to rest.

If instead each line exerted an equal compressional Force, wouldn't you still get this pattern?

The 7-pointed star would certainly be an equilibrium configuration in that case. Whether it is the only equilibrium is another question

I assume you were also suggesting that the vertices were not charged in the new case

What program?

It's programmed in Spyder (Python package), using Matplotlib for the display

recognized the style from another I saw the other night and had a look at your posts, you got a knack for small simulations, keep at it! looks like you have a lot of fun with them

Thanks. It certainly is an uncommon style of post for this site
