"Let's see what this Galaxy-class starship can do." - Jean Luc Picard, Encounter at Farpoint
Possibly the most recognizable ship in the Star Trek universe - the Federation Galaxy Class is a perfect example of Starfleet priorities.
Designed for science, exploration, cargo, diplomacy, passengers, AND battle - The Galaxy Class represents the cultural evolution and technological expertise of 24th century humanity.
FP Edit: If you missed the Bird of Prey post, link at the bottom

Designed and built at the Utopia Planitia shipyards in the 2360s, this was actually the SECOND ship type to be designated "Galaxy" (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Galaxy_class_(23rd_century))
It was the largest and most powerful ship yet built by the Starfleet, and contained several new features and technologies never before seen on a Starfleet vessel.
One unusual aspect that was never seen and only briefly mentioned on in any of the shows or movies: THE ENTERPRISE D HAD DOLPHIN TANKS. Yes, you read that right.

@OP really does own the official Enterprise D blueprints (chicks love me), and yes, this is real.
They're labeled as Cetacean Navigation/Cetacean Ops, and span multiple decks. According to the TNG Technical Manual, inside you'd find a mixture of bottlenose dolphins and "Takaya's Whales" (a fictional species of Earth whale).

Supposedly the inhabitants of these tanks were considered "elite specialist" crew members, and were consulted on specialized navigation tasks.
The name "Takaya's Whale" is thought to come from an anime series called "Aim For The Top! Gunbuster" in which cybernetically enhanced dolphins navigate a spaceship. (https://forgottentrek.com/where-do-i-find-the-dolphins/)

The Galaxy Class *also* had a Captain's Yacht. It had no warp drive of its own, but could travel short distances and even take off & land on planets. On the Enterprise D, its name was "Calypso".
The one seen in the film Insurrection from the Enterprise E was called The Cousteau, thought that one had its own warp engines.

Ever wondered why they always put the Bridge in the top center of the ship? Aside from Gene Roddenberry's Rules of Starship Design (post forthcoming) it's because (in the Galaxy class at least) the bridge is a modular, replaceable unit.
The entire bridge is a single component that can be removed and swapped out for alternate designs. Presumably this is what happened between the TNG finale "All Good Things" and the first TNG movie "Generations" where a new bridge design is clearly in place.
For a time, you could walk the Enterprise D in all its glory thanks to a fan project called Stage 9. This was a "game" that recreated the ship in Unreal Engine, allowing you to simply tour the ship in any way you saw fit.
Unfortunately for fans, CBS gave that project a double-fisted Kirk punch (legally speaking) and the project was taken down. (https://fanfilmfactor.com/2018/09/26/cbs-has-shut-down-fans-creating-a-free-virtual-reality-enterprise-d-walk-through/)

Due to its size and complexity, Starfleet originally only ordered six Galaxy class ships to be built. In spite of their outstanding performance, by 2371 at least three of the initial six ships had been destroyed - the Yamato (due to an Iconian computer virus), Odyssey (due to the Jem'Hadar) , and finally Enterprise-D (due to a Bird of Prey and those nasty Duras sisters https://imgur.com/gallery/YSS7CNV)

After seven TV seasons, a movie, countless books, games and side-canon - the Galaxy Class may be the most well-known and well-documented ship in the Star Trek universe.
Sadly, our beloved Enterprise D didn't make it past the first movie (rumor is that the studio wanted to pave the way for new sleek, sexy ship in future films)

Check out the Novel Startide Rising by David Brin - great sci-fi involving a primarily dolphin crew.

Stage 9 rebranded as Messy Desk and is making an Orville interactive experience as well as a completely original game.

‘Scuse me? ... I guess he’s a time operative from the far off future, trapped in a stable time loop.

Drunkenly building a warp reactor that can explode in your face can fuck you right up.
HashMaster9k
Fingers crossed we get to see Cetacean Ops at some point during Lower Decks. Shit, we just need more reference books for a California-class.
HashMaster9k
(And by "more", I mean "Any".)
SushiJaguar
I'd rather we get no more Lower Decks.
HashMaster9k
Well, we’re all entitled to our opinion.

My bf won't let me read these yet, we just finished all of TNG (+movies) and just got to DS9 season two. But I'm following you for later! <3
mikeGiraffeBaron
The onboard cetaceans remind me of Seaquest DSV.
Hashbrown123
Man, that first season was so good.
Comet260
Yes it was. The second season is a prime example of executives 'helping'.
mikeatike
And we don't talk about the 3rd season. Tho I am a fan of Michael Ironsides, the whole 3rd season just didn't work.
Comet260
I felt like they were trying to copy DS9.
mikeatike
Which was a copy of B5, with the new ship and war starting in season 3.
Psycho3968
We met Gene Roddenberry at Universal's ST exhibit in 1989. He was a nice guy, spent 20mins chatting with him, he was wrapt the show was >>
Psycho3968
kicking off again. He said it (ST) was 'the best thing I've done' had a huge smile on his face. He chatted with fans for ages. Good times.

webspaceships
Yessssssss. Also lol I definitely also have the blueprints and tech manual
Elnauriel
Ditto! There's the one that OP, you, and I have, but there's another set floating around out there I've heard about. Slight differences. =)
webspaceships
I think the one I got was from the Star Trek Encyclopedia back in the day? Unlike @op here, my set is blue iirc
Elnauriel
The one OP and I have are white with blue ink. Here's the other one I was thinking of. =)

I liked it when, in one of the movies, the disk portion separated from the ship and became a flying saucer.
WeirdStealth
I always thought the idea of the ships being able to split was a cool idea.
Magnebro
Heh did you check the Prometheus link?
WeirdStealth
That is my favorite ship in Star Trek
KillingTlme
Lower decks was really good.
Magnebro
Love it, and love that it counts as canon (some interesting side effects of that already)

Like what?

Such as that the universe is overseen by a smiling space koala!
mikeatike
Q-oala?
telecomteardown
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it also the first Enterprise to have families on board?
matthiasfactor
I believe that was the Ambassador class
Magnebro
The Galaxy classes were all intended to be "city ships" with families yes, though I haven't found solid confirmation that they were first
RatsLiveOnNoEvilStar
True, but the question was about the first Enterprise, so unless B or C had families, D was the first
PicassoCT
the hanson family "raven" was a family ship
Magnebro
But not designed be Starfleet to BE a family ship (also after the Galaxy was designed)
cfry23
I’ve got those blueprints (and the original ones) and they hide some amazing stuff
ionicseraph
That's all well and good but can it cross the delta quadrant in only 7 years?

Intrepid is coming!

Took me FRIGGIN' AGES to find that Dolphin in the Gunbuster ( Aim for the Top ) Series but here it is: https://youtu.be/bRNQHVfjOO0?t=590 ¹

GunBuster also has a sequel DieBuster whose status as a sequel only really becomes apparent after having watched both shows to the end for ²
Durahl
a sweet ( and tear-jerking ) homage to the prequel.
Magnebro
Niiiiiice thanks!
Durahl
You're welcome ( still crying tears from rewatching the last episodes of each series while looking for the rotten dolphin )

There were 10+ mostly empty galaxy class ships being built for the war with the Dominion. The empty parts of the hull were filled with /1

The TNG novel Dark Mirror included a cetacean physicist or nav specialist, and was the one to realize they were in the wrong universe.
Comet260
Love that novel so much.
EmporerDragon
It was good, but I wound up liking the Relaunch Mirror Universe novels more.
Comet260
When did those come out?
EmporerDragon
The first book, Glass Empires, came out in 2007. Though other relaunch books such as The Soul Key Disavowed also involve the mirror universe
subduedreader
I just wish that they used that mirror universe for DS9.
Magnebro
Mirror Universe seems to be a love/hate thing in fandom... gotta admit i lean toward the latter (not EVERY woman has to be a mirror-skank)
DeaconJon
#10 one thing I've never quite understood as a Star Trek fan for decades. What's with the lack of seatbelts and emergency spacesuits?
aristera
If you needed a seat belt on the bridge, then you need one everywhere and it wouldn't be safe to walk around the ship.
DeaconJon
I was thinking for when red alert is called. You go to you duty station and buckle up or clip on or something.
Magnebro
I always assumed the inertial dampeners were SUPPOSED to resolve that... But they're always the first thing offline
TychoTychoAlba
Theres a deleted scene in Nemesis where Picard comments that they finally have seat belts.
MadMupp
Wait, so whenever the Enterprise was destroyed the Dolphins & Whales died too?
Magnebro
Look at the blueprint! THEY HAVE THEIR OWN ESCAPE PODS!
MadMupp
What about Datas cat?
Magnebro
That's answered after the crash

Hopefully it came across that it was excitement, not like anger or something

I was legit sad when the D crashed. My childhood was in those bulkheads

Trisar
Re: Generations destroying Enty, the Galaxy model was top heavy and unwieldy, and the sets didn't look good in HD film.
Trisar
This is why in Generations, the lighting aboard Enterprise-D was much darker than in the TV series, to hide seams and such.
mikeatike
Yeah, the model looks rough in the HD releases of Generations. You can tell the production value went up, but the big D model was dying.
Trelfar
I remember reading somewhere that part of it was the set also looking cramped in 2.39:1 wide shots because it was designed for 4:3.
Idsertian
It looks anything but cramped in the remastered version of TNG. It's incredibly spacious.
EggFooYung
Sovereign-class looked better anyway.
Trisar
She was sleek, I'll give her that. I prefer the Akira-class, personally. Now that's a good-looking ship.
Magnebro
Both coming!
AntiProtonBoy
Fuck CBS for taking down Stage 9.
HawkmanXLII
What's stage 9?
SouperScott
Did...did you read the post?
HawkmanXLII
Missed that part.
AMRIV
Magnebro
Yeah it was no threat to anyone.
TLoATDaE
They wanted to monetize something like that, but fans beat them to it and put it out for free. Less fan tools to contradict their writers.
LerryV2
They should have just renamed it Space Adventure
MMX2019
They did it years before, Enterprise technical manual - still have the CD-Rom somewhere. Low-res quicktime movie transitions, but still
Kahneolus
The Simon and Schuster one? I had that :)
causality
Don't forget about Axanar.
LurkerOfDarkness
CBS has a long history of doing all they can to piss of star trek fans, instead of working with.
JamesBluntThatSmartassCunt
Disgusting.
CerisCinderwolf
Can only hope the devs are still at it quietly and then "oops, someone somehow managed to steal and release it"
billyjonas
What’s stopping them from making it anyways? I guess it would take a long time to make. Anyways...Fuck cbs
Arudinne
CBS' lawyers and money.
JamesBluntThatSmartassCunt
To do what exactly? Sue the devs? Why can’t the devs just do it anyway without posting updates?
SomeYesMan
Got my hands on it on one of the last days it was available :/
magister333350
Fuck CBS in general for being shit with Trek, imho.
Comet260
NuTrek sucks so far.
Elnauriel
Lower Decks, despite being a comedy, shows a TON of respect to Trek canon. Definitely feels like a love letter to older fans.
invenio
It was a labor of love from the developer. It was not monitized so it was just an F U move from CBS to sh*t on the fans.
bigguywhokills
"If we can't make money from it, nobody can have it."
PutItInNeutral
They never forgave the fan base for forcing them to bring back TOS after it was first canceled.
vystral
That was NBC
PutItInNeutral
But CBS is now on the channel than NBC used to be on in my television market. Check and mate.
WeirdStealth
But the good news is that they're going to be using the Volume which is the same screen tech the Mando used.
WeirdStealth
But it still sucks that they took down Stage 9, they should've offered to help fund development.
Raxiel
Be a shame if it ended up somewhere like the pirate bay
Magnebro
Decided not to touch on that in the post hah
BahamutBBob
What? Things that get posted online, then get DMCA are never truly gone? I don't believe you!
BahamutBBob
I totally didn't download AM2R after Nintendo made the team pull it!
SilentShift
What's AM2R?

Alpha Mario 2 Redemption
qroniq14
If stage nine was making money off the project that’s probably why. CBS ha DBI issue with the fan YouTube series enterprise continues >
qroniq14
Because it was not monetized it was made by fan donations. Great series by the way really cool. Cont of origianl Star Trek series.
JamesBluntThatSmartassCunt
It was not making money whatsoever. CBS was just being shitty for no reason.
MyCommentsUsuallyHaveTypos
I really want to watch StarTrek, but I don't want to muscle through episodes. Good stuff first to get my hooked (like I did for Dr Who)
caduto11
watch voyager first, the other series are slow to start, especially original and TNG
pendrin
Personally I started with the earliest show canonically Enterprise, but it is also one of the newer shows so I got spoiled on better effects
pendrin
After that I went into The Next Generation since it is one of the fan favorites.
Magnebro
BUT THAT THEME SONG (Enterprise)
pendrin
Oh god I hated that theme so much true that
pendrin
I kept waiting for it to change like in anime to something better
