I'm a teacher and the SRO at our school goes out of his way to make sure that he's involved in activities beyond monitoring and guarding. He helps coach the basketball team, quizzes kids on trivia (for police badge stickers) and he came into my class one time (I teach History/Government) and answered kids questions about the law/policing. There's a lot of structural problems with the police, but we do need to work at elevating those who do good into positions of power.

Camden, NJ, fired its entire police department. Years later residents were happier, cops had to reapply under stricter guidelines and less benefits, crime went down.
It's not perfect and they had new growing pains, but the corrupt department was gone.

Another thing that makes a big difference is setting up free childcare centers so parents can drop their kids off while they work. In the cities where that has been tested there has been a significant drop in crime and a rise in the local economy.

I have to repeat this so often is amazing. Police don't prevent crime, they just don't. Even if you truly believe they are your friends, they still show up after the damage is done. Only making sure that the impetus for crime is lowered can you lower crime. Pragmatism is so rare in politics :(

Yeah, I believe that some police are necessary, because sometimes people will just commit crimes, but if we reallocated 85% of any given PD budget to civil and social services, most crime would dramatically drop in that given area.

I watched Lilo and Stitch last night. I am from the US, and it is such a totally American movie. A Young woman's parents die, and she is left taking care of her little sister. The state is threatening to take her away instead if she doesn't do better, but is not helping with child care assistance while she works, or medical, etc. I help out my disabled sister. She gets SSI and was getting free medical, but for some reason, they took it away last month.
