The valuations of these companies, and the ungodly amounts of money being thrown their way, have become utterly insane.
How is this not the biggest tech-hype bubble ever? And if it pops, will investors finally learn their fucking lesson?

Oh my God. Please let incompetency and poor financial planning destroy Facebook. That would be so great

And when noone has a job, noone will be able to afford their products, but who cares about humanity, the planet, climate, the possibility to produce food, oxygen or anything? I mean, I can just BUY all of that in the all-of-that-store!
ApothecaryGrant
The way these big companies use AI it's like trying to use a microwave oven as a space heater. They're cramming LLMs into services that people either don't want to use or programs they were already using. I don't see an effort to monetize. So why are they throwing billions of dollars at AI compute hardware like it's a goldmine? The true goal is probably to sell the comprehensive information their AI teams find as it combs through the mountains of data they've collected from us over the decades.
SavageDrums
I cannot wait for the LLM bubble to burst.
I hope that everyone who invested in it goes completely broke.
Fuck the techbros, they're all, to a man, shitty people.
DonL9
You know it wouldn't last long when grok started talking shit against Elon. I hope they all turn on their masters. Fuck those guys.
kInADress
Oh look, one trick pony techbro invested in garbage again
djangojazz
How the fuck that weasel looking asshole can still be worth billions blows my mind. Same with Elon. It's like their success has nothing to do with their worth.
EchoPMIM
Their only real skill is attaching themselves to smarter, more productive people and then scamming their way into failing upward. Musk in particular--it's why he acts so desperate and needy, because he knows that he's never been part of the Smart Kids Club. Zuck is better at concealing his ineptitude in day-to-day life, but the string of high-profile failures proves he's not really any smarter.
Ink41d0
Hey, Firefox / google / etcetera, take the hint; STOP PUSHING AI AT EVERYBODY VIA EVERYTHING! If i see one more "AI summary / search" so-called 'suggestion', I will FIND a way to resurrect Netscape, and this time it won't be a INO fork of Chromium, so help me!
DonL9
Mira Murati turned down a $1 bil package and Tulloch turned down $1.5 bil. They may know something or see something that the broligarchs don't.
Or they want to keep their distance from the steaming pile of dumpster fires that's going to ensue.
rbudrick
He is such a fucking loser. Every big new thing he pitches is some me-too bullshit that fails miserably. Metaverses, vr headsets, ai, cant wait for them to lose another 10 billion for nothing. He's a fucking idiot.
Richardslapnuts
mikeatike
Uhh, do you think AI hype is a smokescreen for the Epstien Files?
Vergenbuurg
They intentionally lied about the popularity of online videos as a method of receiving news. It destroyed the online journalism industry and flooded the internet with videos nobody actually wanted to watch.
They made a massive push for the "metaverse", which nobody wanted. A failure calculated in billions.
Now they've gone all-in on A.I., which again, people don't want.
How are they still in business? It's obvious they have no clue what people actually want, yet keep pushing their own vision.
Haishao
watching this unfold on my 3d tv
InfocalypseRising
Almost like a product that doesn't actually do anything well and costs a metric fuckton of money was always going to implode.
MyRespectableAlterEgo
This has given absolutely every indication of being a bubble since the jump. The tech industrys insistance on never learning a single lesson is just embarrassing... the NFT and Crypto bubbles had barely finished bursting when this one started to blow up: the whole industry is just narcissists going on shopping sprees until the planet cooks us all to death.
InfocalypseRising
A cartoonishly credulous tech media that just breathlessly repeats anything techbros say without bothering to check its veracity certainly doesn’t help
Equinox13
AI does some things well, often the tedious repetitive tasks that take well to automation, just not things that require human reasoning and decision-making (which is what everyone keeps trying to shoehorn it into).
InTangier
You don't need a huge LLM for that, though.
Equinox13
Nope, you don't. But people WANT a huge LLM because there's this fantasy where you can ask your robot to do anything and poof, it's done. The ability to tell a robot to do the simple, tedious task and have it give you a chipper response to let you know it can and tell you it's done helps convince people it's magic (it's not) and human-like (it's NOT).
IhopeyougetstageIIIcoloncancer
While it does admittedly do a few things well, it's very much a hammer - a tool which only works on a single specific task.
And every time I see these articles, it's like reading about a $100B valuation on a company that just makes framing hammers.... which is BONKERS.
Equinox13
Yeah, I work with AI and it's amazing technology, but the things people try to use it for make me want to wail in despair sometimes.
boredatworkthatsall
Remember when those crazy oligarchs took over the American government and gave federal contracts for AI services to themselves? Is it still a bubble? A revenue stream was needed, and one was successfully stolen. That valuation is no longer completely smoke and mirrors.
flarflarf
zuck making back to back great decisions with this and the metaverse stuff, good work zuck, keep it up, dont listen to the naysayers, you're doin great!
ThaEnder
I still have no idea "where" the metaverse was even supposed to be accessed from. Was it a game you downloaded, a dedicated section on FB?
dogfavoriter
Advertising revenue still go brrrrrrr so they can afford to keep pouring money into the pit.
mrthewhitee
Really hammering hime that idea that the rich are rich because of how smart and good at business they are.
somethingshocking
Will they learn their lessons? Hahahahahahaha..ha....ha.....sob.
mymustachecallstheshots
How many bubbles until the rest of us learn these fucks will never stop with this BS. Oh, wait, we already did, but the policy makers allowing this BS are the ones who havent leRned either of thsse lessons because they are too busy trying to skim thiers off the top...
welluhwhatdoyouwantmetosay
But the AI told them it was a good deal.
Friendlyhedgehog
The ones pushing it will be fine because they'll cash out before it crashes. Pensions, index funds, and the gullible will be the ones who will lose everything.
MaaxximumHaamster
They cut cameras for the next event at Facebook hq, so …. My bet is they are doubling down on AI hires, but want to keep it on the DL….. ALL of these events are horny for AI. It’s what they do.

Don’t think AI is going to flop. Like with all tech it will continue to get cheaper and smaller. Either we will adapt before it ruins society or it’s going to be a rough next 20 years.
sodalis
Tax these fuckers so we can have a nice world, please. Or kill them all and take their shit. Either way.
Garwain
Automation could make life way better for almost everyone. Instead, with people like Zuck in charge of society, this is what we get. If he succeeded in automating away the need for even more human labor, I tend to think he would be happy to let the "spare" population just starve to death.
Donfolstar
Copied something already successful and screwed over his friends, followed by an endless string of failures = one of the richest people ever
ToSisPoS
Meta AI is the Facebook of AIs.
usingYourMomAsAHat
I've completely forgotten about the metaverse. Is that still a thing?
TheFifthTK
Investors are throwing money at the *word* AI…they don’t even need to understand the functionality or if the same could be accomplished with an algorithm. People just seem to want Siri (refused it then & now) in and on everything. You can really tell when AI has been tacked onto something when they have to wave the option in your face. Leave it to something it’s good at like finding patterns over long periods of time or parsing massive datasets, but it doesn’t belong stealing from the humanities
ontarioOT
Clockworkdancerobot
AI gives governments and companies plausible deniability to be super cheap and act like amoral scumbags. "Oh it wasn't our policy it bad intelligence." See: police uses of facial recognition, Hertz's rental car scanners that mistake water for a dent (no way to dispute), removing customer service... just a few off the top of my head.
errantcompass
Just wait until people start hijacking the system using QR codes on cardboard...
SarcasticComment
hilarious how hard I had to fight them to give me documentation for damage before taking the car. "there is no way in hell I'm taking this car to be blamed for this later. took multiple pictures. had the manager print a report and sign it. They only care when it is your fault, not theirs.
ninjarnia
It is just another element of enshitification. It is just that in this case the LLMs enable them to enshitify entire suites of services and products without that nasty ramp up!
geekykeycap
Also like... There are legitimate, non scummy uses for it that companies are investing in. I'm a consultant integrating AI into systems *right now*. It's useful but companies don't understand when to use it, and I'll be honest they're not often listening to experts like myself.
Some overpaid asshole gets a directive from above to "use AI" and just slaps it where he thinks it'll work. Then my overpaid ass tells him not to, and he asks me to anyway ha.
Ivain
Well I mean if you set it up so that you need to make 'corrections' every few years, that sounds like good job security to me.
TheZerax
My old company hired a technical director for two years while I was there to work on AI and the entire time he produced jack shit as far as "innovations". Every tool he suggested AI for, we already had a tool that could do the job better, cheaper, and more reliably. It's garbage.
quade
There's no way AI will be a bigger tech-hype bubble than NFTs...
brownribbon
What could possibly lead you to that conclusion?
GCRust
NFTs were money laundering operations while the art galleries were closed during COVID.
The AI tech bubble is a bunch of goobers going "Trust me bro" until eventually "Just give me millions of dollars to make this thing, then we can ask it how to make money off it." (Which translates from conman speak into "PUT THE MONEY IN THE FUCKING BAG!")
delecti
Depends how you look at it. AI is absolutely bigger right now than NFTs ever were, but there was no actual value at the core of NFTs, while AI is not completely worthless.
mikeatike
I think the thing that defines the bubble is how money is "lost" when it pops.
Using scare quotes since it was really never worth all that much.
DaveSamsonite
The total financial jmpact is at least 1000x higher.
TheManWhoStaresAtTurtles
Better comparison is cryptocurrency/blockchain itself/in general. NFTs were a stupid but easily identifiable product that were hyped up for like... less than six months. Blockchain has endured for longer, and isn't really much more viable than its dumbest bastard child, the NFT, but it has way more reach.
LeonardLChurch
It literally already is, NFT hype lasted maybe a few months, AI hype has already been going since 2023. I urge everyone to actively avoid using AI for anything as it's already caused more problems than it will ever solve
TheMershedPerderder
Yeah, like, I can't even get customer service lines to work properly. Companies will do everything in their power to be shitty.
jasondeslin
Ever solve? AI is being badly misused by idiots that don't understand it, and the harm it's causing are all 100% the fault of capitalism.
But right now you sound like an "expert" claiming man will never fly after hearing about the Wright brothers looking for funding.
AI is already saving lives with cancer screening and medical research. Just because billionaires are being fucking morons (like usual) doesn't mean the tech is useless.
dnebdal
Probably important to separate machine learning from LLMs. It's not exacrly chatGPT that's annotating pathology slides, and I suspect the medical ML field would be about the same place as today without the AI bubble happening simultaneously.
Source: I'm at work and should be running some slide images through an ML tool to demonstrate that the system around it works, instead of surfing imgur.
321plum
...but you are surfing Imgur. So isn't this therefore jeopardizing your utility as a paid worker? Serious question.
dnebdal
It's friday evening and I'm the equivalent of a tenured worker in a European research institution, and I'm probably the last person in my lab - or the entire country, most likely - that still slightly cares how this not-very-successful international attempt at scraping together enough training data works out.
JustDumbCommentsAndCorrections
Speaking as someone who works with a website that has been constantly fighting being DDOS'd by AI bot scrapers for the past year or so, the bursting of this particular bubble can't come fast enough.
somerandomusernamebecauseididntlikemyoldone
I need a new browser extension to block all the shitty AI trials, tool pop-ups, and so forth. Every damn website I go to has some new ai garbage they want to sling my way. It is infuriating. I would rather have actual shitty popup ads from decades ago than this nonsense.
Exordos
I use Firefox and the only three extensions I use are AdBlocker for Youtube, Ghostery Tracker & AdBlocker - Privacy Adblock, and uBlock Origin. So far, no issues and in fact, I don't even know what those AI trials look like because of these extensions. Give them a try if you use Firefox. Maybe they're blocking more than they should, but I'm happy and prefer a lot of privacy - and also I h-a-t-e advertisements, all of them, passionately.
somerandomusernamebecauseididntlikemyoldone
It's not actual external ads or popups, they are parts of the websites and services themselves. I have a whole slew of extensions around trackers, adblocks, noscripts, anti-fingerprinting, and so on, it's not related to those. Every search function, every ecommerce site, all of the Internet tools I use (email, photo albums, etc.), my phone, a lot of the software (like PDF viewers) also have ai promotions within them. Every company is trying to make use of it and I despise it all
