The original Ghost In The Shell movie holds a special place for me, I’ve been chasing the high that it gave me ever since. I really enjoy serious Anime like this, Paprika etc because they don’t hold your hand like Hollywood tends to

The second movie was also great, I watched it at the movies. I enjoy the melancholy vibes of Batou’s life.

G.I.T.S Standalone Complex (SAC) was good. I love love the Tachikoma and own several models. But it feels less adult than the original movies.

Arise is a good mix between them, and I also like the Logicoma.

I agree. It's one of those movies I can re-watch frequently without getting tired or bored with it at all.

My favourite film , the first one. Got to disagree about Arise, though, it was OK, but overly recycled, fanservicey and lacked credibility. 2017 live action had the same problems but worse. And underscore 2045...dreadful. GitS is dead.

"I really enjoy serious Anime like this" I feel one of the difficulties in finding new things that fit this criteria is that a lot of fans (of all kinds of media) don't make these distinctions and get offended if you then try to. People can enjoy what they want and for whatever reasons they want, but if (for example) a person does not distinguish the literary quality of say Harry Potter and LOTR then I know their recommendations are unlikely to suit me.

An understanding of that concept makes a good test of a reviewer, to me.

I've bought the mangas right when they were released here where I live! I've also watched the movies (I have it in two different dubbings!) and I love the TV series. But I'm still a bigger fan of Shirow's Appleseed series

I have Intron Depot 1 and I think there was a 2 which is where I first heard of Appleseed but GITS was my intro to his work

I'm a bit sad that he doesn't write any manga anymore. He is only interested in his artwork books

Ghost in the shell was perfect. I’m also chasing something similar. Let me know what you find

The movie Spriggan was released a couple of years after GitS, worth checking out.

Spriggan is like XMen meets Ninja Scroll, which might work for some but I find it ridiculous and excessive and just straight up bad.

Each to their own.

On the basis of this comparison, I will skip Spriggan. But thank you both!

Akira? A little bit messy compared to the manga but that was my first big Manga Trip. What I really enjoyed with the Ghost in the Shell books was the amount of side notes about weapons, technology and society; it shows how deep the authors went on details and universe making.

Akira was pretty good, great soundtrack, but the drawing style was a little off for me. Combined with the story, it just made the whole thing feel a lot less adult. Good suggestion tho!

I see what you mean, GIS is more polished and complete film, like a real Hollywood film.

I find The Expanse appeals to similar parts of my brain, even though it's not anime. Serial Experiments Lain has some similarity, although it's odder and very dated technologically these days (part of its charm for me). And read Appleseed if you haven't, the anime/CG versions are grossly simplified. Otherwise, I really don't believe there's much that can compare.

Serial Experiments Lain was the first anime I saw 👀 That’s a great suggestion. Haven’t seen many I liked but that was definitely one of them. The expanse never really clicked for me, but each to his/her own :)

I read the novels first, maybe try those if the TV series isn't for you. But if you read, try Iain M Banks, his Culture series is like nothing else. Some similarity in theme with GitS, specifically transhumanity and consequences of machine sentience.
