Because her suit copies the background but doesn't make her transparent. How it shows something different in every direction is "sufficiently advanced technology".
There are essentially 3 versions of Ghost in the Shell: 1. The original manga from Masamune Shirow, which lighter and cheekier. 2. The two films from Mamoru Oshii, which are deeper, more somber, and my favorite by far. 3. The animated series (SAC, Arise, and their respective movies), which are kind of a mesh of the two. (There's also the Hollywood version and a few different video game takes, but that's another story IMO.)
When the Wachowski's were pitching the Matrix, the included a VHS copy of Ghost in the Shell with their screenplay to demonstrate the visual style and thematic elements they envisioned for the film. There are some good comparison videos out there showing visual ideas that were borrowed, and some scenes that were almost shot-for-shot remakes.
Which, in turn took inspiration from Philip K. Dick's 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'. Nothing is created in a vacuum. Nothing is completely original. Which is why characters in GITS, and especially in its sequel Innocence, incessantly quote philosophers and religious texts, almost like, when connected to the entirety of human knowledge all at once, they have on original ideas of their own. (At least that's my interpretation.)
Unrelated: Holy crap is Innocence a pile of "look how smart I am"-ness. I love ghost int he shell, but ... innocence is nothing other than that. The original has a couple quotes that seem a bit much, I guess, but it's also about ... so much. Innocence is just an expanded episode from the series, so it feels, to me, like it's not really there for any reason.
Oh, yeah. Definitely not suggesting it as if it's a bad thing. Just ... watched Blade Runner well after The Matrix, and was like "hey thats the thing".
The one movie I refer to if asked what movie I like most. It upholds in quality still. Amazing for the time and still gets better with every new watch. Mamoru Oshii and Masamune Shirow were such a great combination.
Mamoru Oshii puts a ton of focus on setting a stage and a mood. His Patlabor 2 film is an even more extreme example of this. It's an extremely tense pol-mil thriller with some of the most hauntingly beautiful imagry.
And I might add, the environment really deepens the fundamental pilosophical questions present in the actual action. Without this it would be an okay film. With it, it is a damn masterpiece.
Remembering fighting the tank in an abandoned museum, where it shoots up a whole evolutionary tree that's carved into the wall. Have we separated ourselves from evolution? Are cyborgs the next race?
Innocence is such a good, underrated film. I got to see in a theater earlier this year when they re-released it for it's 20th anniversary. Still holds up. Some the CG is rough by modern standards, but the story is more prescient than ever.
Is there somewhere to watch this on streaming? I got the first few discs from Netflix waaaaaay back when, but someone lost several discs in the middle.
The main plot is regular action-movie intrigue. Motoko's doubt about what makes the self is tangential but welcome. And you didn't mention the music: https://youtu.be/MZK2nRX_DnY
I couldn't disagree harder about the story. There are many beautifully drawn anime from the '90s, but GITS is one of the ones we keep coming back to b/c its story, tackling AI and post-humanism, individual vs. collective identity, memory vs. reality, and existential questions of self, freedom of choice, and the search for meaning, is just as prescient today as when it was released over a quarter century ago.
okay, my critique was a bit harsh, the notion of exploring humanity is an intriguing one, but it's done in a style that leaves something to be desired in my opinion. I am western, and japanese storytelling doesn't translate very well, in terms of narrative beats for me. Don't get me wrong, I love the movie, but I watch it for the art and animation primarily. your mileage may vary.
Okay, I'll give you this: There is not a lot of "flesh" to the story, as far as twists, turns, revelations, background etc. goes. So I understand, why you might feel there is something missing. However, I would counter that is actually a positive in this case. There is not a wasted second in this movie, no roundabout way of getting to the point of questioning what makes us "special". And it just leaves you with that thought...I just love that.
I am Western as well and love GitS in every aspect. Never would've thought Stand Alone Complex even topped that for me. My favorite Anime of all time, easily.
Seconding. Her skin is therm-optics. He wears a sort of poncho that has it. His is black market. It would be almost impossible to black market his body, because of the systems involved in cyber bodies. A poncho, though? Easily done. [This is also referred back to, sort of, in Stand Alone Complex, when someone mentions that they're not sure how much of their bodies would be left if they had to return the government issued parts].
The way it was explained to is this: the Major is aware of the fact she runs around in a robotized body and doesn't feel really connected to it much, so she feels less obligation to treat it like an extension of herself, ie: clothe it. The other guy doesn't know his ghost has been hacked so he still wears clothes like he always does. It's not about their genders but their specific characters.
Also Masamune Shirow loves tits, I think? Reference the Puma sisters from Tank Police.
It was my first real foray into anime and it ruined me because I am extraordinarily picky and little measures up. Cowboy bebop is one. Ghibli films, while completely different in feel, do stack up well. But little else.
There are so many. Im sure adequate entertainment can be found. The first idea would be to look for the same studio or director. Otherwise, it comes to personal taste. Patlabor maybe. Or look up Kon Satoshi's movies. And Matsumoto Leiji made masterpieces too. Im still amazed that Daft Punk managed to convince him. Akira, Macross, Royal Space Force, Violett Evergarden, Garden of Words, Yokohama Shopping Trip, Wolf Children, Mononoke, or good old Vampire Hunter D. The possibilities are endless.
Agreed. Others that are top-tier and non-Ghibli are Akira, Samurai Champloo, Ninja Scroll, possibly Vampire Hunter D (but it's been a long time since I saw it and I can't remember how good it actually was), probably a few others.
Cowboy Bebop was my first in late 90's when i just thought it was another animation cartoon like the rest of european animation movies. Wasn't before the early 2000s anime/manga wave i realised it was an anime i had seen.
It's very cool my only criticism is she does no damage to a sign she launches herself from and she knocks one piece of pipe from a bunch of other I guess welded pipes but that object doesn't react like the roof did when she landed. Not that it matters. The point is conveyed.
Prosthetics can be heavier. When the rival Section 6 sneaks in two extra operatives in camo, Togusa checks the floor pressure sensors and asks Major if the minister could have a custom body because the weight reads too high (but nope, they all have to be naturals).
Hes using "hypervelocity ammo", its why it makes a huge mess of an armoured police vehicle. I always loved this movie. The spider tank at the end, such a great showdown.

That's what I mean. They thought of every aspect. Everything has logic behind it instead of just "she's invisible"

IIRC that camo appeared in some William Gibson novel - if the wearer moved fast it would lag and reveal a vague shape just like in this scene

I wanna say necromancer bit it could also have been idoru
