He was about to put down the tool with the sharp part on the table. Big no no ?

That’s actually acceptable and advised practice. Wood won’t wear the blade as much as other metal tools that might hit a plane on its side.

On a work site that’s good practice but this is my bench and I know there’s no nails or metal hidden in the wood that could knock the edge

You seem to know what you’re doing but when I grew we didn’t do that because it made the edge dull quicker.
