While I love D&D, it has a lot of shitty legacy mechanics it could do without.

Alignments are a lot more of a guideline, don't take them too seriously and you'll be fine.

It's a useful, quick two-letter code to *roughly* describe someone's outlook to help you run them. It's actually brilliant.
If you get bogged deep down in semantics and ethics and confusion over a small game mechanic that's on you boo
The problem with this is the fact that they are required to have, tie into the magic system (but not your character directly) and works 1/
Entirely on DM fiat. It either comes off as reductive and needlessly restricting or completely superfluous. Whereas other systems, 2/
Like WoD has an alignment system that actually mechanically interacts with your character.

It should be generous/selfishness and principle/unprincipled, not good/evil lawful/unlawful.
Honestly it's not really a matter of framing but the fact that the rules don't engage with your character mechanically and isn't vested 1/
in the setting itself the way race/class is. 2/
Try Planescape.
Your reputation really should affect how the NPCs interact with you. Do you keep your word? Are you a bleeding heart or a mercenary?
Exactly, plus you can tie your "alignment" to specific organizations via an oath. Thus giving your beliefs some relationships to use.
