Liam Neeson's deadpan delivery in Ted(can't remember if 1 or 2) was great. It was a genuinely funny scene of him paranoidly buying cereal and his delivery of his lines was perfect.
This isn't PhotoShop, it's a legit movie poster. It's also not a remake, it's a sequel--the cop characters are the sons of the original characters (so Liam Neeson's character is the son of Leslie Nielsen's character, for example). I've seen the trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLguU7WLreA), and it looks surprisingly good if you're a fan of the first movie IMO.
I re-watched Police Squad a couple of years ago. The first three eps were still excellent. The last three... it's good they stopped when they did. They'd run out of steam, and of jokes.
I actually kind of like how it's not a reboot but a continuation and the entire cast are just the sons of the previous cast. I also think the end of that scene with OJ's portrait should have also had a single black glove. But I guess they weren't sure if it would fit.
I think the biggest issue this movie is going to have is that so many people think this is a remake. Even in this comment section alone a good amount were complaining about it being a remake and changed their tune learning it was a sequel and not a remake.
Watched this earlier this week. I'm a little bumbed but that's hollywood. I'm still gonna see it cus I'm a weak fuck who is thirsty for comedy. This is our hill, and these are our beans.
When they released the photoshopped poster which had ten Neeson hands that all had five fingers I told my brother it was a missed opportunity to actually do something funny with AI. Putting an AI disclaimer on it really spoils the fun though, lol.
It's not really a reboot—more of a continuation, since Neeson plays Frank Drebin Jr. In the film, they’ve even got a photo of Nielsen on the cop fame board, along with George Kennedy and the rest. Honestly, I think that makes it way more palatable.
Liam has a great comic sensibility. I believe his career will continue on into his old age with parts like this for him - just like Leslie Nielsen had.
Capitalists gonna capitalize. Reboots are a profitable strategy, they're gonna use it, so you might as well let go of your resentment and have a more peaceful life. Sometimes reboots are really good; like, we got the new Battlestar Galactica which was actually a lot better than the old campy 80s series. We've gotten several Superman and Batman films, all of which have had their own point of view and their own value. The new stuff is always optional and doesn't erase the past.
but really what has Neeson done comedy wise? like I could see him with some of the drier parts of nielsen's humor, but to get the timing, and the expressions down as one example alone to compareit with Nielsen, just feels too far out.
It's not that they can't, it's intentional. Notice the HUGE uptick in Nostalgiabait films and old franchises they're ressurecting? It's a direct result of the recent union strikes in Hollywood— no need to pay good writers what they're worth if the Studio already owns everything in the IP, or has an "in perpetuity" contract for the IP. You just get an intern to churn out a basic script, then feed it to AI for the details (or vice versa) and then you save about $1-2 Million & pay no royalties.
Nope. He's Frank Drebin Jr., and there's a scene in the trailer where it shows a bunch of photos of old cops, and Leslie Nielsen is there as Frank Drebin Sr., and a few of the other actors from the original are on the wall too.
99,999% of the people who say they hate this are all gonna go watch it anyway (as the ticket sales will prove), proving the execs that shitty remakes make money so they will just keep doing them. The real ones who don't encourage this shit and will never see it: I see you and appreciate you, and your excellent taste.
Fine, in this movie's case I don't approve. In some cases sequels would be appreciated, but I would prefer they'd make entirely new movie that has nothing to do with the original. Not even sure if they can make the humor the same, and make it work, in this day and age. But I'm old and so I'm gonna stick with the original Naked Gun trilogy.
That is your good right. However, judging from what I saw so far, the humor is mostly on point. I lost it when Norberg Jr. shook his head at the camera after looking at his dads picture, who was played with OJ Simpson. That sort of shit is exactly the kind of joke that'd be in Police Squad.
I'll still watch it, won't pay them, but I'm allowed to be grumpy that they don't come up with fresh ideas and just keep piggybacking stuff from the 70/80s
Think the hint was that the original King Kong movie is from 1933 & all those after are remakes/reboots. So the reboot/remake stuff goes way back to the early days of cinema.
Read it like "do you only watch OGs or do you admit to watching reboots?" I get how you're reading it, they have been doing it a long time. I think there's almost 30 movies with Kong in it lol. Something wild like that.
Because the last few ads for movies I've seen include: final destination reboot, naked gun reboot, John wick spin off, Jurassic park reboot, top gun 3, the accountant 2, conjuring spinoff, freaky Friday 2, nobody 2, how to train your dragon remake.
Go watch more movies. I've been seeing original films nearly every month at the theater and they've all been great. And those are just the movies I've seen, not counting the others that came out that I haven't. Plenty of new movies coming out.
Back in '04 I was on night shift and my supervisor was on day shift. We had a document that we would write notes and reminders from one shit to the other in. He always loved using way more exclamation points than necessary. Then he started experimenting with colors (bad) and fonts (hard to read) to draw attention to things. One Phriday I happened onto this, added it to the document and the insanity stopped. /a/oR3FKB0

Police squad and Naked Gun are peak comedy. I kinda have high hopes for this... The trailer for it had me rolling in the cinema.

I don't like remakes, but Liam Neeson in the remake of a movie with Leslie Nelson is really funny to me because the names were sooo close

Leslie Nielsen, you mean. Ironic and hilarious you couldn't even get the name correct.

You do realise that it's a sequel, not a reboot? Those are two different things.
SuperFlamingTominoHead
It's probably what's called a "soft reboot" these days.
vegivamp
No, it's a sequel. Neeson plays his son.
xizar
I thought he was the older brother...
doctorId
How would he be the older brother to a man who's older than him?
malachilenomade
It's not a reboot since they have established Neeson is supposed to be a "Jr." So it should be a sequel.
Ventx

I'm a grumpy person that hates that they're still rebooting everything they can. Leslie Nielsen was 1 of 1 and it almost pains me to see this remade.
GIRobot

Reboots are profitable because people go watch them. So many original concepts are outperformed by the Nth Mission Impossible and John Wick.
Whitebeardthepirate
I'm in agreement. this is like remaking goodfellas, casting Vin Diesel in Pesci's role, and saying he's going to do a better performance.
Badprenup
Yeah it's exactly like that! Except for every single part of what you said.
Whitebeardthepirate
ahh cool. so when you get a spare chance, why don't you go fuck yourself?
wadatahmydamie
Is it? Part of Nielsen’s charm is that before he did comedy, he played hardasses. This seems like a continuing of that tradition
Whitebeardthepirate
but really what has Neeson done comedy wise? like I could see him with some of the drier parts of nielsen's humor, but to get the timing, and the expressions down as one example alone to compareit with Nielsen, just feels too far out.

It's unnecessary. The original still holds up. But unlike all the Disney remakes, I might watch this one.
ThisIsWhereTheWildThingsAre
I'll still watch it, just as a pirate lol. Just not thrilled that they can't come up with fresh movies
