My absolute favorite part of the series was when the hatch was discovered. And then we get Desmond's perspective inside the underground bunker, of people outside trying to get in. The "hatch" was that first really pivotal turning point. I didn't like the alternate universe premise. Things got way too complicated and bizarre. But what I did enjoy were the character moments. So many great ones. That's what held my interest.
I both loved and hated this show. The acting and character plots were great. Whenever they explained or revealed something sucked because it was always confusing and made no sense. Like heart of the island.
Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse seemed to get really behind on the writing after season 4. Things just didn't feel very well thought out. And I thought the whole alternate universe thing was a cop-out. I didn't care for how the show wrapped up. I hated it. So I just focused on the actors and the chemistry between characters. There were so many great little moments. That's what I appreciate.
JJ's parting wisdom for the writing team (when he left after season 1 to even greener pastures) was to change up the show entirely, every season. Every year, look at the theories and expectations of the viewers - and defy them. Clever idea, but without guiderails it led to a very disjointed experience.
That's the impression I'm under from an interview I saw with him. IMDB gives him 2 Director credits in S1, and a total 3 actual writing credits. He created it and ran, left it in the hands of Orci and Lindeloff. And Jack Bender has 42 Director credits.

I liked lost and don’t care about the ending. It was a snapshot in time of a crazy ass story.

Lost was great through season 4. One of my favs. My interest fell off a bit in 5 and 6 though.

They never did explain it, did they? Just "here's an intriguing thing! Now on to the next mystery!"

JJ Abrams was really completely hands-off after season 1? No input at all up through the end?
