I was in a used book store the other day and got to talking with a stranger, discussing the books we were both picking out. She suggested a book that I might enjoy, but I can't find it based on the info she gave me.
Here's what I know about the book:
1. Stranger thought it was called "Silence" or something like that. (There's a novel called "Silence", but it isn't this book she was talking about)
2. It was maybe a sequel to José Saramago's novel Blindness. (This isn't accurate either)
3. The story is about people just getting burned out and refusing to vote, so much so that they can't even hold proper elections because of low voter turnout. They make voting mandatory, and voter turnout is even lower than before.
Anyone have any ideas on what this novel is? Who wrote it? Anything that can point me in the right direction to find it?

I knew someone worked in a bookstore, said they get requests like this all the time. Very frustrating but kind of fun also. Legitimate question, in this case: is this book fiction or nonfiction?

It's fiction, as I said, it's a novel. I think @plasteredpenguin figured out the book I was looking for. Thanks!

Are you sure it isn't Seeing? https://www.amazon.com/Seeing-Jose-Saramago/dp/0156032732

No, I'm not sure it isn't that. No, not, isn't...shit too many negatives to figure out. Yeah, I didn't know what the book was called, but this sounds like maybe what she was talking about. Thanks a bunch. Have you read it?

I have not, but I think these "guess the book" things are fun. Linked Amazon only because their description sounded more like what you were describing.

You're thinking of The Turner Diaries. Not the book I'm looking for.
