I'm not a big comic guy but judging form the previous movies, is it possible the characters are just not that compelling?

Too many characters, most get minimum development, mostly it ends up being the doctor doom movie.

I've always found the stretchy guy to be off-putting.

Most comics are more setup as something similar to a series like classic TNG; you create a series of characters and put them in various situations to resolve with only mild arc movement. A 'full' arc would be more a miniseries than anything else. Otherwise, it's too dense for normal movies.
