That’s every new DMs’ secret twist

Bonus points if you tell the party their full name and they still don't connect the dots

His name is Theim Yagabud which is an anagram for I Am The Bad Guy.

Good on the success! Though knowing how in general hard time players can have trusting NPCs, I raise a little flag. Once the group will learn this, especially if they really like the NPC, they may react by never trust any NPC again ahead, to the detriment of your story telling intents; ie, the twist can come at the cost of you burning bridges. A tip is to drop hints well before it is revealed (though perhaps when its too late to hinder the villain's plan from a narrative perspective). 1/2

Build up suspicions ere revelation so it's not a flash from clear sky. That way the players can maintain confidence in their ability to discern NPCs' personalities and intents - not only will they feel smart for being alert but the confidence in their ability to forsee betrayal [even if late] lets them befriend new NPCs ahead. Well, just my 2 cents, hehe. Have fun stabbing the party in the back! :) 2/2

I go by the Frodo Baggins description of a baddie, “He would look fairer, and feel fouler.” If the party chooses to trust this guy, I like to imagine they could see it coming when he turns coat on them.

I've sprinkled some hints, and they've discerned he could be up to something; however he's helped them so much (for his eventual own gain) that they want to see where things are going. They're planning on back stabbing him at some point.

There was an encounter where a knight hunting the BBEG came across the group and the party. Knight said their "friend" was pure evil and with their help knight could defeat him. Party said, "so you can't defeat him by yourself? I think we'll take our chances with BBEG". BBEG revealed a "bit" of his power and killed the knight. Party was happy they chose their "friend", but decided to keep an eye on him.

That's nice, keeps them on their toes at the same time as they know they're in a bed of their own making! :)
