Vintage!

Indeed! Basically all of the stuff toward the bottom was lab gear, and due to noise / heat / power, it was kept powered down 95% of the time. Most modern services and apps are running in containers on a pair of Raspberry Pis and/or NUCs, so the vintage compute and network stuff stuck around for sentimental value, mostly, heh.

Could look quite tidy, but the stickers makes it look like a mess

To each their own. Was tidy enough for me, and the stickers were just for fun!

Definitely a matter of taste. I like clean lines and a sleek appearance. Makes for a better overview IMO.

That's a lot of empty 48 port switches, copper, and fiber for a home setup. Now I'm invested in knowing how it's used and why it exists. Are there 30 employees accessing the server files or one guy playing runescape

My guess is that it's used for learning - bottom three switches look like an Arista leaf and spine lab. There's some juniper in there and I'm guessing the Sun and the black box are generic servers or possibly appliances.

Continuing my wild ass guesses, the middle switch with most of the patches is likely to be the actual home network. There's an old Cisco switch 4th from bottom that's likely used for OOB management and at the top I missed another server and a WTI OOB management solution (likely serial/KVM). I'm guessing that the Juniper device is a lab firewall and there's another device mid-rack providing wired internet/firewall.

Probably just to fill the rack. Or this person's hobby is to play with switches.

Mostly the latter ;)
