Lights look like weird CFLs.

My parents installed these recessed lights maybe 15-20 years ago with energy saving bulbs and weird, plug-like bases.

Is that a 4 pin CFL? There's probably a starter ballast somewhere up there. That's my guess.

If you want to go the easy route, they sell adapters. I just put an adapter in one so I could screw in bulbs we already have.
Fridgesavers
My only trouble with those is when pushing the lamp in, the fitting often crumbles around it.

What I'm asking is how difficult is it to change the base--I'd prefer to replace the socket with one that fits a standard screw-in bulb

Yeah I came back and noticed. Sorry.

Make sure it doesn't have a ballast or anything if you're going that route.
Hurro
Easy, but unless it's a single you'll want to change them all. Then the light switch off, pull the white ring down (usually held in by

Compression or spring clipz) and then it'll hang from the wire. Disconnect the wires and reinstall new one matching colours.
Hurro
You'll need a 4040 connector for the new one most likely.

Just a can light. Isn't hard to replace, but it does involve electricity, so no touchy-touchy unless you DO know what you're doing.
TheRealScrotaur
Replace the whole fixture. You may be able to get a discount from your utility depending on where you live. Those fixtures suck big time.
fugue042
Right- I was advocating for swapping out the whole fixture (can light).

I am in agreement but was lazy with the message size. Figured I'd piggy back on the comment with the zappy zappy warning.

Oh, rt on. I gotcha. Thanks!
