How to capture audio from your linux desktop

Pulseaudio has this nice "Monitor" function that let you capture anything playing on your desktop. Pulsaudio is already installed on most distros. You also need to install pavucontrol (Pulseaudio Volume Control) to bring up this configuration interface. Once you open it, you will find that magic drop down menu in the recording tab.

Play something on your favorite media player and see how the vumeter responds. If if it moving accordingly, congrautlations, you can procede to the next step.

I'll take audacity as an example but it should work on any sound recording software. You just need to remember that you need to record from pulse.

Audacity has its own vumeter for audio input (1), you need to click on it to enable it.

Next, select whatever pulse input device works (3). The output device (2) isn't important here.

You should now be able to capture audio from audacity by clicking on the recording button.
