job's done

This is how we started. This abomination was installed by the subcontractors when I had my new HVAC ventilation installed. I had them re-do it.

Moved to the corner where it should be but...

... it still looks like crap. Well, let's build a bulkhead then!

Cutting out existing drywall. Used my handy dandy laser level to get nice lines.

Replaced spiral ducting with flex duct so I can shove it in my bulkhead.

First drywall patch

Left side of the bulkhead. Framed with 2x4s and 2x2s. Lot's of measuring and cutting and screwing.

Other side of the framing. The duct T was too large to span a continuous run across with the 2x4s so I just built it out on either side. It's super sturdy on both sides.

Drywall sheets going up

Measuring for the light and smoke detector was a pain in the ass.

Begin mudding

Finished mudding? I think I did more and sanded and more and sanded but this is the last mud picture

And paint! (a year or so later whoops)

Paint job isn't perfect, but I was quoted $1600 for just painting so, good enough. I think it turned out pretty well.

What’s the difference between a bulkhead and a soffit? This is not a riddle, but riddle answers also accepted.

They were just going to leave it like that? The fuck kind of hacks thinks that's an option?

Heh, when I showed the main contractor what was going on here he wasn't too thrilled either. Their workmanship was shoddy but saved me $10k+
