I have a collection of broken measuring tapes. I collect and restore distance itself. Should I share my hobby with you?

It looks great except I can’t get Clocks by Pink Floyd out of my head.

But have you read Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett?

I have not. Whats a rough synopsis?

Time is a resource. Everyone knows it has to be managed.

And on the Discworld that is the job of the Monks of History, who store it and pump it from the places where it's wasted (like underwater - how much time does a codfish need?) to places like cities, where there's never enough time. There's also a clockmaker in it working on the perfect timepiece.

It looks like you only collect a specific time!

I try to collect pre quartz movements. But the truly old pcoket watches are either too expensive to buy or too rough to restore.

ok, quartz means electronics, right? Or am I mistaken? So these are all hand wound? Do you wind them daily?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes you are correct. Quartz is electronic! These movements use electricity to charge a a tiny quartz crystal which osillates under said charge. The electronics count this precisely tuned oscillation to track time. Very cool technology.

With over 50 watches in this case alonge, it would be terribly loud to keep them all wound. But yes these are all hand wound watches that I've restored mechanically. I've left the body, crystal, and faces untouched as I appreciate the patina created by their age and history.

I really like and respect that you enjoy the age of the watches!

Thank you, in this age watches have become an accessory when they were once an essential tool. The mechanical engineering just to tell time is staggeringly beautiful. Clockworks was an artform.
