I work with kids on the spectrum and they get a fair amount of tv time but usually can never agree on what to watch.
I saw Holy Grail was about to expire on Netflix and submitted “watch 20 minutes, if you hate it we’ll vote again on what to watch”
Knowing this generation doesn’t have the greatest attention span I expected to be shut down before we even hit 10 minutes. They watched they entire thing, even asking to rewind scenes. I even geeked out and busted some trivia after.
I can die happy. Now my watch has ended.

Also, nice

Nice.

My dad thought Holy Grail was stupid, so I challenged him to watch it. He sat there, looking like Grumpy Cat, but he kept his word. He harrumphed at the line Arthur said to Tim the Enchanter, "Anything that you could do to help would be very helpful", saying, "I knew he was going to say that". He finally broke and laughed after Arthur and Bedevere crossed the bridge of death, and Bedevere asked Arthur how he knew so much about swallows, >>

>> and Arthur said, "Well, you have to know these things when you're a king, you know."

Remember that moment when King Arthur says "You make me sad"? Well, it's the opposite of that now.

Because Holy Grail is universal! It crosses boundaries

Was the rewinding at the castle Anthrax scene. I rewinded back to that scene a lot as a kid. LoL!

NGL, that Grail-shaped beacon IS pretty compelling.

I am on the Spectrum and I watched this with my Dad in theaters for the 49 and 1/2 anniversary. We both love it may all children have the chance to enjoy this masterpiece. God be praised.

We are the generation that say...

Ni!

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

By about age 13 I could recite the entire movie's dialog from memory from any starting point. My parents said I wasn't on the spectrum and didn't have ADHD, though.

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What age range?

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Youngest 12, oldest just turned 18

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Back in 1984 I persuaded my school to show Young Frankenstein. It had to be at lunch hour and split over two days, but we got it done.

I wonder if you just accidentally created a cadre of anglophiles? No matter, it's good that the new generation is versed in the holy texts. I have found my kids often request the older, slower paced cartoons.

My son loves the spam skit as much as I do. Completely bonded over it and I still catch him watching it at random. He was 7 when I showed him 3 years ago.

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Someone should seriously study the movie to see why it held their attention so well.

11 months ago | Likes 86 Dislikes 0

I have ASD, and I love it because my brain is constantly trying to make sense of everything, and this is so absurd, it makes no sense. It's refreshing because I don't have to find meaning in it.

11 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Because it's good and no one does quality controll like adhd, audhd, or autistics.

Study concluded. Results: 'It funni'.

I mean it's essentially comedy skits stitched together into a cohesive narrative where you're bouncing from one thing to the next so it gives you that dopamine hit with each beat.

11 months ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

My ADHD kids also enjoyed Spaceballs. I feel like there is hope for this generation yet.

11 months ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Clever writing. Monty Python is peak comedy.

11 months ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I mean, the movie switches characters - plot points - topics and 'goals' (if you can call them that) rather rapidly. The randomness of the film probably appealed to them

The coconuts were the first big laugh, let’s start there

11 months ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 0

Were they able to read the subtitles during the opening credits, or did you read them aloud for them?

11 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I was talking to a fellow neurodivergent coworker of mine about this movie and I realized that the "swallow carrying a coconut" scene perfectly represents a neurotypical (Arthur) vs a neurodivergent (the guys on the castle). Arthur mentions the coconuts like it's no big deal and isn't interested in learning why they would have been there, but the castle guys get hyperfixated and can't let it go until they get the answer of why he would have found them.

I have watched Holy Grail at least 15 times (very conservative guess). I giggle with glee every single time I see Arthur and Patsy "gallop" into frame.

BRAVE, SWEET CONCORD! YOU SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN!

11 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone on the spectrum, I enjoy it because this kind of comedy doesn't rely on social/cultural understandings nearly as much as much of mainstream stuff. It's a lot easier for me to connect with because it makes absurdity of social norms, or disregards them entirely in favor of clever wordplay, slapstick, visual gags. It's a welcome change to the majority of comedy out there, especially modern stuff.

11 months ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Would that apply to the "Airplane!" movies?

11 months ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I would say so. I've only ever seen Airplane! itself, and I thought it was a riot. That and Mel Brooks stuff, like Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Spaceballs.

Can I have just a little peril?

This is because PG-13 wasn't a thing until 1984. Red Dawn was the first PG-13 movie.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (still officially PG) is often credited with getting PG-13 added to the rating system.

11 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sometimes the ratings slide the other way too, Dawn of the Dead (1978) was considered too violent for an R rating. Although its sometimes mismarked as an R today, its still officially unrated.

11 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Fun fact. It was actually Gremlins that overhauled the rating systems. Thats why the original copy is PG and if you buy one now. It’s PG13

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, Gremlins is still PG. I checked the box.

I've seen other films mismarked before though so YMMV. Netflix used to claim Clockwork Orange was only R. There really is an R rated cut, but it only existed on VHS. All DVDs (including the Netflix ones) are the X rated cut.

11 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's not the bit I was disputing. I agree Gremlins was one of the films that got PG-13 created.

But Gremlins was never re-rated after the creation of the PG-13 category, it remains PG.

Funny thing, my parents sent me to an evangelical high school. We watched this movie in BIBLE class and there was NO fast forwarding. Previous teacher for that class would fast forward through so much mild shit but the one my senior year respected us enough to not do that shit
