Put your thing closer to get a more accurate reading. Those things take an average temp of the field of view. The further away you are the larger the area they measure. Think of it as a cone that spreads out from the front of the gun. The laser is just a guide to the centre of the area not the exact point it measures.
I never said it measures the air, and good ones will sure but the cheap Amazon ones are super inaccurate from that distance. My source is I just checked using my peice of shit that I keep in the house for the same reason.

Way too far to away to measure right. The laser is there to tell you where it's point it doesn't actually do the measuring.

It measures infrared, not "the air". It can see infrared from 1 foot or 10 feet just fine.

Then if you know it measures infrared, then you know the distance is largely irrelevant. But, you mentioned "too far away".
