had a buddy in high school who liked to do yoyo tricks, he did this one that still blows my mind today, where the string wasn't connected to the yoyo like usual, like it was wound around it but he would launch the yoyo in the air then snap the string like a whip around the yoyo mid air and it would wind back up.

It is like that. I don't have one yet, I've been meaning to get one of those and devil sticks

If I recall correctly you need the string off to do rocket in the pocket.
