CDs were all the rage, and Nintendo decided to stick with cartridges. Sadly, it was probably inevitable...
BobRozzer
I'm missing the OG Xbox here. *pours out liquor*
chaoticgamerdude
Lmao Xbox One. What a shit show.
CorpseStarch
Dreamcast is the best console.
link270
I loved that thing!!!
DjCloudo
Reason n64 sold less is because they didn't break... hell my mates mum threw his downstairs, still work. Ps3/xbox360 oh no I'm too hot *dead
Scylia
They only shit themselves from the heat because of the swap from lead based, to lead-less solder around the 360 / PS3 launches.
GyprockGypsy
What? PS2's still work...
Disturbed12CG
Played mine last week
link270
I remember all my ps2 friends always having issues. My n64 still runs to this day.
DjCloudo
Ditto
PickleRiiiiiiiiiiiiick
The ps2 slim is so much better than the fat console. I've had mine for well over a decade and it still runs great, as does my 64.
Disturbed12CG
Never once had an issue with my ps2 and I was a heavy player
MrFancyPanzer
What's with all the 90s kids having n64s? Everyone I knew had a ps1, sometimes in addition to the n64.
PhantomOfTheDopera
Look at MrFancyPants over here. I had a Nintendo Famicom knockoff
arrowhen
Even after all these years of 90s kid memes I still don't know if a 90s kid was *born* in the 90s or was just *a kid* in the 90s.
MrFancyPanzer
I think of it as people who were kids in the 90s, and old enough to experience it.
link270
Maybe because it came out in the mid 90s? I never had any playstation, till I bought a ps3 after high school.
MrFancyPanzer
Both came out in the mid 90s about a year apart.
HYPERCARAMELHUNTER
Same, as a kid PlayStation sounded way more appealing than Nintendo 64.
Volpe42
Wheres the Atari?
arrowhen
Adjusted for inflation, the Atari 2600 cost $826 modern dollars when it debuted.
AcolyteofPizza
It comes be sign of economic times as well as population age demographic.
link270
Very true
Volpe42
Its missing one at the very top. PC
Volpe42
For all those down voters, there were games on the computer before consoles existed
echo1echo
Xbox one must seem like a failure to MS since it only sold less than half the amount.
RingyDingy
It's been available less than half as long, I don't think it's in its sunset years or anything
link270
That’s so interesting to me.. no ever says it’s a failure, but I guess it’s double the Wii U, which was just under 20M.
echo1echo
I suppose the xbox 360 was a good machine even though it had it's troubles, red ring of death etc
Scylia
It made money, just not a huge amount. Its the major reason why Microsoft has invested heavily into buying up game developers for the 1/
Scylia
launch of the next generation of consoles, and has invested heavily into revamping their flagship franchise for the Xbox for that launch /2
echo1echo
Hopefully they will get back to talking about the game play side rather than the entertainment tv side
truthsmiles
Yeah that seems wrong. Maybe because of timing? Didn't it come out exactly against the PS2?
link270
A quick search show the ps2 came out March 4, 2000 and the n64 September 26, 1996 so they would have kinda competed. However, the GameCube
link270
came out September 14, 2001 so it was a direct competitor. The ps1 was December 3, 1994 though.. so idk.
truthsmiles
Huh. 4 years is seems like a long time.. maybe that wasn't it? Or maybe the numbers are just wrong?
link270
According to the wiki article I posted the numbers all look correct. I do know the ps2 sold strongly for a long time after it should have.
arrowhen
As I recall the PS2 was an affordable DVD player with some shitty games for at least the first year or two before it hit its stride.
LuckDoc
That record is unlikely to ever be broken because of new gen prices. PS3 was $600 at launch, PS4 at 400$, I expect PS5 will be 500$
link270
The ps2 started at $299, while the GameCube was $199. Also the switch is $299 and looking at inflation the ps2 would be $418.
LuckDoc
Didn't the PS2 immediately drop in prices after launch compared to the next gen? I remember getting it not long after launch at 179$ in CAD
link270
It may have. That would make a lot of sense.
Scylia
The reason why the PS2 sold more has little to do with its price at launch, more that it was continuously produced for 13 years, and sold 1/
arrowhen
Also, when it first came out, the PS2 was a console AND a DVD player for less than the cost of a DVD player. I know that's why I bought one.
Scylia
in lower developed markets when its lifespan in developed nations had dropped off. PS2 was a competitor to the 360, and PS3 in Africa 2/
Scylia
South America, India, South East Asia, and China. Now everywhere runs on the same console generation, aside for China, who make their own /3
LuckDoc
I think it's a bit of both points, or do you not think a highly priced product can deter shoppers? Part of the Nintendo consoles success /1
LuckDoc
was that it was cheaper than Microsoft and Sony consoles, allowing it to grab a large portion of shoppers attentions. /2
Scylia
Oh, a highly priced product can deter lower income buyers, absolutely, but for the PS2 at launch that wasn't the issue, the Gamecube was 1/
Scylia
the PS2's direct competition, and was priced lower, but sold far far worse. the PS2's longevity was because of its further falling price 2/
Scylia
over its production period which made it a far more appealing purchase in lower income parts of the world than the 360 / PS3 is the point /3
