I made a thing! A bookshelf to put in our new house! I think it turned out okay, considering I’ve never made anything from scratch before…

Gunstock is a nice stain. I used it on my own Poplar bookshelf.

That's beautiful.

Turned out okay? Nah, that's nice.

*scratching neck like a crack addict* got anymore of those... shelves?

Bookcases are one of my top 4 pieces of furniture. Yours looks wonderful.

Thank you! It was a real education, haha. I’ve already started on an L-shaped desk for my office.

now make the hidden room behind it

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nice to see you built it by the book

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks great. Just a suggestion but if you put a plinth under it say 5mm higher than the skirting & in a bit it will sit flush to the wall

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s got a board behind it that it’s screwed into; I didn’t want it flush because there’s an outlet behind it. Thank you!

Yeah, I’m coming to realise that. I’ve already started on a new desk for my office. Picked up some gorgeous mahogany for the top this AM.

For future dowel needs —— cheap as chips bamboo skewers are quite strong :) Nice job ?

Huh, good to know! Thanks!

Thank you!!

Thought it was a hidden doorway from the thumbnail, awesome job though dude!

Yep. You know what you have to do OP.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Well…It is right next to the bedroom wall…I guess I could close off the door and put in a new one behind the shelf…hmmmm…

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s a fine looking Zoom background!

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Haha I hadn’t thought of that, but good idea!

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That’s some damn-good bookshelf making there.

Thank you! It was a real education, haha! I’ve already started on an L-shaped desk for my office.

nice work! what are you using to support the shelves? i only ask cause they dont look recessed into the side walls, so if ita only nailed or

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

screwed, they wont be abke to support alot of weight

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s got a board and several screws attaching it to the wall. Thank you; it was quite an education, haha

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nice work

Thanks!

Now tell people there's a hidden doorway behind it so they'll check it out

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks like you're going to need a ladder ?. It's a good day for getting ideas on what to fill it with ?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh trust me, we have boxes and boxes of books to unpack lol

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like it, but it seems strange for it not to have a top with that decorative bit. Won't it be stressed at those two joints when moved?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The “pediment” and backboard keep it from wobbling, and it’s screwed to the wall.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Better start up on the next 5 shelves as bookshelves tend to go from empty to full before you can blink.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh believe me, the wife is eagerly unpacking several boxes of books as I type this lol

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it looks great.

Thank you!

Very kind of you to…GIF, lol. Would that I could design and build stuff as beautiful as Ms. Kendrick.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It looks like it's ready to fall apart at the slightest touch right in front of your disapproving father. But I'm sure it won't. Probably.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Considering I learned everything about how to make it from my dad, who’s a master carpenter in his spare time, I feel ok about it lol

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Professional cabinet designer. Looks good. If you are worried about weight bowing the shelves. You can add a strip of wood along the back

2 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Good to know, I’ll keep that in mind

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It looks solid wood, so it should be fine unless you load the crap out of it. You can do this if you think you need a bit of strength.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And your finish work is nice. Just fyi.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thank you! That part was deeply, deeply satisfying lol

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It really is isn't it? I love the way things reveal themselves as you stain it. The grain begins to pop.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Under the shelf for a little strength

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Or behind the backing, along the middle of the shelves. Then just screw it though the back board and in the shelves.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A possibility. But the shelf might be able to fit flush to the wall is all. We design them to be inset so the brace can be flush. But you

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can definitely install it underneath after the face. And can make a screw point to attache it to the wall if you like too

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And use a couple of L brackets and screw the top shelf to the wall so kids can’t climb and pull it over on themselves

2 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 1

No. Put some hinges on it and make it a door to a secret room.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What they said. Looks great, but pretty unstable when loaded.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Just like my ex.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It’s attached to the wall via a plank and a couple screws. No kids, thankfully, but appreciate the advice!

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Earthquake safety too.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In S central TX, so we don’t really get many earthquakes, thankfully
