I make unnecessary things and today I built a mirror that lets you turn off the areas where you don’t want to look at yourself.x

The legend returns! <3

So, you made a Cyberpunk 2077 mirror?

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly, an ex of mine had problems with body dysmorphia and would cover mirrors with paper towels so she couldn't see her face. This is an awesome invention for someone that's struggling mental health wise. At least to take a bit of the edge off the day.

Poor thing.

i guess those activated mirrors in cyberpunk 2077 makes more sense now.

Nice to see you back

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And, if you don't want to see their back, just turn that panel off!

Holy crud an Enron shirt?!? Damn

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OMG! I thought you'd left! Musta taken forever to make this mirror build, huh?

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sexy pornstache inventor dude!

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's pretty cool. Clever use of liquid crystal panels.

7 months ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 2

Needs a 5th button you can press to turn them all on/off at the same time

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This one took 2 years from concept to reality

2 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The best part is how they're so incredibly reflective they still work as mirrors even turned off.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Great to see you back!

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Glad to see ya back here @op. That’s another great invention.

HE'S BACK!!!!!

I so missed these posts

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’d actually really appreciate a mirror like that for dysphoric days

7 months ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

True. I'd love to do that to the mirror over the bathroom sink.

Causally showing off the Enron merch

I was like "why tho???" Then I saw who made it

You’re back!!

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit! I hadn't seen one of these in like forever!

7 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You see, this is perfect for someone who doesn't like open mirrors. Mirrors have always creeped me out ever since childhood and only have 1 in my house which is located in the bathroom. I definitely see this as useful for people who have phobias of mirrors like me 😅

For the last time, none of what you make is unnecessary

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey! You're back!

I was reading the title like "wait a minute… could it be…?"

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

F'ck yeah! I love this!

7 months ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

I could even see his back in the mirror!

7 months ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I was just missing him last night while my son was making an automatic hoodie raiser so happy to see this!

7 months ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I miss his shenanigans. This is the shit that imgur needs.

DUDE... been gone for ages!

Hey! His front!

7 months ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

I do this thing called “don’t look at the mirror”, it’s an imperfect strategy but extremely resource efficient to implement.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Want! To build! How? Where? What? Don't ask on the why!

7 months ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 1

Not OP, friendly hacker speculating: There's a film that changes transparency when you run a current through it. PDLC, I think, is the buzzword. Anyway - you can put that film over a mirror, and the rest is pretty straight forward. If I were building this, that's where I'd start - this stuff (https://www.amazon.com/SW-Switchable-Electric-Adhesive-Protection/dp/B07X2865FW/ref=asc_df_B07X2865FW) and some basic ESP32 to control it.

Damn you think it's just a light film over the mirror? I think it's the same material essentially, at least what I first thought of. But I was hoping that there was a version with a mirror finish and he was turning them translucent when each panel was turned off rather than becoming translucent when the mirror was visible.

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

That's at least how I'd build this effect... it's basically off-the-shelf parts. IIRC you can get glass plates with this built in, and you could probably silver-mirror the backside of one of those if you didn't want the film. But yeah - these are basically going to be toggling the translucence of a glass panel in front of the mirrored surface, not toggling the actual mirroring. Effect will appear the same...

7 months ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

The glass panels I'm thinking of are basically two glass plates with the PDLC material sandwiched between. It's the same as the film, it just comes as a factory build unit.

Why is the remote 2x2 when the mirrors are a single column? The interface layout should match.

7 months ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Agreed!

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you! Frankly, I'm offended this isn't the top comment.

7 months ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That’s the part that makes it useless

7 months ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

{{ENLIGHTENMENT}} oh , OH. I GET IT NOW !!!

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

okay but this is actually great. would help me so much with hygeine. going to the bathroom can cause such horrible dysmorphia for me because of mirrors.

7 months ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

I once stepped out of a hotel shower and came face to face with a full body mirror. The body dysmorphia hot HARD and hasn't left, even 9 months later. It makes me feel almost sick when I think of it.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You could just, cover your mirror when not using it

7 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not climbing onto my counter and sticking things in my walls just to cover and uncover my bathroom mirror.

I'm 5'4 and my height is in my torso, my t-rex arms can't reach!

7 months ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Okay that may be difficult. You can buy mirrors that do this, but it's usually expensive because they're meant to be either transparent when out in the house, or doubling as a screen for tv or stuff. I was thinking like, a curtain rod type thing.

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I drew on the top few inches of my bathroom mirror with a dry erase marker when I started going bald when I was a teenager. I hated looking at my bald spot getting bigger, hairline receding, so I just drew a big censor bar lol. You could do something cute like clouds, the ocean, a flower garden, or something seasonal; but use paint markers so it lasts longer and looks better than dry erase!

7 months ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd probably keep the panels turned off permanantly.

I was just thinking you could sell me one of these that is just frosted glass and id never know

Like Tallulah Bankhead said: They filmed Shirley Temple through gauze. They should film me through linoleum.”
