I need help with my PC

I need help upgrading my Graphics card on my PC. I've tried other forums but to no use. I'm posting this here as a last resort. If anyone can help me out, i'd appreciate it greatly.

So here goes.. I'm trying to upgrade my GeForce GT 520 Graphics card to the GTX 970. I want to know if my PC can run it, and if it can fit in my case. The GT 520 is around 5.7 inches while the GTX 970 is 10.7 inches. Will it fit my case?

Also, can my computer handle this card?

Specs:

Gateway DX4860 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2320 CPU @ 3.00GHz, 3001 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) 6GB Ram, 1.5TB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GT520 1GB Graphics card

I'm aware that i need to upgrade my PSU which is fine, but is everything else okay?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with this. Upvotes for everyone!

Sometimes the question is not: "Can I"? It's: "Should I"?

theres standards, even for cases. if your case adheres to the atx standard the card will fit. just check if your power supply is enough.

use a ruler. look t the pin connector on your current card and compare it to the 970. make sure the power unit is strong enough. i doubt it.

Yup. And yea, i need to upgrade the PSU.

dude. its your case. measure it.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I realize that. I was just asking to see if someone has the same PC as me with the gtx. I guess I'll measure it lol. thx

Case closed

Get all new. The lower bay will be crucial. Also keep airflow in mind and the min supported pci lanes

Will it be okay if i removed the HDD cage?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you can i think, but take measurements, otherwise check out fractal design cases. They are not that expensive. Also consider mb and cpu

And cablemgmt

A gtx970 mini would fit. https://www.asus.com/uk/Graphics-Cards/GTX970DCMOC4GD5/ check to make sure it is compatible with the mobo

That case will probably be an issue for the psu and gpu room along with airflow. I would consider starting over if you have the budget.

I very much doubt that the PSU can handle a modern GPU.

Does anyone know a good website i can get gaming PCs online? Instead of amazon?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Newegg barebones kits are good place to save money

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Try this one: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/, just find the components you have/want, and it'll do a compatability and price check.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You'll get a huge bottleneck. Just throw like 900$ on a completely new one. It's just 900$!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Will it still bottleneck with a new Power supply? Sorry, i don't know much about PCs.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's the CPU that's old. I would suggest going for like a 6500 which is really good, as for the PSU you should absolutely get a new one.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And you'll need to get a new motherboard too. Buy the one that works with your RAM.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's easier to just get a new PC lol. Too many upgrades.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you have the budget, just buy a new one from scratch to avoid issues when upgrading, sometimes it's compatibility issues and sometimes

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's just old.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thats not 4 cores. its 2 cores with hyperthreading IIRC

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looking at your pc and your question. I don't think you should even try. This pc look old and pre-made in a factory.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're right. I was hoping i wouldn't have to buy a gaming PC, but i guess i'll have to now. Thx

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You could always build a gaming pc. It's easier then upgrading a factory build pc and most of the time cheaper as well. Look on YouTube how

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd toss in more ram at least. The speed of that processor is cutting it a little to close for a 970. Maybe go one step down from a 970. 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

2/2 also a PSU. 600+ watts at minimum. Good luck.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

A GOOD 450W PSU is more than enough. The entire system will draw less than 350W with a 970.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah. I just like to be safe. Maybe for future ad dons, etc...ever since I Ran a system underpowered and smoked it, I'm nervous.

Thank you!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well, a tape measure/ruler would help you know if it fits - you could also remove the harddrive cage. Any PC can handle any card [1/2]

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Side-note: I would definitely recommend upgrading your Mobo/CPU soon. I haven't seen a basic circuit board style one in a while! :p

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea, it's been awhile lol.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

[2/2] as long as the PSU requirements are met (get a good, well-known brand PSU, e.g. EVGA Supernova 650).

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hey man, to be honest, it's probably not going to work. You're system looks pretty old, and size wise, might not work too. [1]

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In my computer, I also had an issue where the newer graphics cards didn't work until I upgraded my BIOS firmware, and I have a mobo [2]

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's only about 2 years older than the card I installed. Also might have to worry about other components being a bottleneck to the card.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea, i realize now that it's useless to upgrade my PC. I'll have to buy a gaming one, or build one. Thanks!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The very bottom drive bay might be a problem.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If he's never going to use the bay, he can "modify" with some tin snips.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The HDD cage?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, is it removable?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure. I'll have to take a look at it when i open it up again.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hmm,I think it is, I looked at the photo again

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Will the hard drive stay put when i remove the cage? Any downsides to removing it?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What is the Power suply how many watz it needs 500 for the 970 , it will probably fit,

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even if the PSU says x watts, if it's some random non-brand chances are it's not going to be reliable or even get that number.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... so I'd definitely upgrade either way, seeing as this seems to be a pre-built, 99% of them have terrible PSUs

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

PS Do you have a sound board?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hmm, i'm not sure lol. I'm not very good with PCs.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That little thing below the gpu

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's 450w. I need to upgrade it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Download speccy, and see the configs, pick the name of your motherboard and google if it can sup the gpu

9 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

I'll try that, thanks!
