DMing is fun. Honestly I think I like it better than being a player. My adhd brain has a lot of character ideas I never get to use, but now they’re NPCs and I get to have fun playing a lot of different characters, and the villain, and the narrator, yay.
TheMagnificentBastard
As a DM, I have a blast. I also taught all my players how to DM so I can get a break every now and than.
Mangohime
As someone who avoids DMing like the plague, I appreciate all of my DMs (of both kinds) and all they do
YeroctheBarbarian
I think my thing is I like both. I love crafting a world playground for my players. But I also like discovering a story as a player and focusing on my one character and bringing them to life.
Frostycopper
I love to DM too more than be a player.

DMing a one shot is fun and easy and I recommend everyone try it. DMing a continuous campaign is far more difficult and I recommend if you want to try it, try a prewritten campaign first so it reduces the work load.

Having DMed one shots and multiple groups for multiple years, one shots feel so much harder. This meme should be reversed.
TheWonderfulWizardOfOs
i dono, the simplicity of one shots can be nice, especially if you don't have to worry about long term problems with actions and items. sometimes my long term campaigns are just a series of one shots until i can start pulling together loose threads to build a story

I might be able to play for the first time soon! Super excited.

I have the game I run for friends, the game for randos at the shop, the game for my friend's homeschool crew and a play by post game that I use for beta testing homebrew, emotional damage and general toxicity to keep it out of the three games that matter...
mksu
I'm honestly more interested in worldbuilding and campaign construction than I am in actually running a game.
CatskinnerKeen
Running games becomes necessary at that point; no better way to test the world, iron out the kinks, and think through the ramifications.
PoniesForDays
It sounds like you should write a book. Some great fantasy series are actually DnD campains. Like the Dragonlance series.
mksu
Maybe someday, though I think writing a novel is quite a bit different than writing a campaign. There's a lot more emphasis on characters and narrative, whereas a campaign needs those things, but is primarily presented as a series of scenarios and environments.

I once DMed a game where I literally made everything up as we went along. No planning. It was insanity.

There was a door that had a face as a lock where something obviously goes in the mouth to open and the Halfling thought it'd be funny to put his ass in it. Now he's stuck and everyone is trying to get him free because there's zombies coming down the hall, slowly, they even cast grease. The dice made everyone fail, I even fudged a bunch to loosen it but I had seen the future and now wanted initiative with zombies and grease everywhere. It was a narrow hallway. It turned into the ice capades.
BenderRodriguz1010
The zombies were low level Romero esc, this was legit the first anything they were dealing with so I let them do basically anything lol Swinging them down the hall into each other while trying to slingshot themselves past them ect. The whole thing needed Benny Hill music
rollpercentile00
Did that for years with my original group... never knew where it would end up. Had some BBEG's and a map. We had a blast!

What I want to do is set up a loose world design that can facilitate playing it by ear, in a way that the players can't tell when I'm following a "script" or just winging it for the moment.
Sliprunner
That's the real secret: There is no plan, only loose guidelines! I can't railroad the players if I haven't even built the railroad yet and only have a pile of wood, rails, and nails on hand!

DnD is just collaborative bullshitting, and that's why I love it so damn much.
