No one taught them to care like that.
It doesn't matter if it's a dog or a cat, their own or someone else's — they just see a small being that needs protection.
This moment made me think: maybe animals understand connection on a deeper level than we give them credit for.
I usually play some soft sounds at home when my pets are resting — they seem to really enjoy it.
If you're curious what that kind of sound feels like, I left a sample here: https://youtu.be/N9XW5pvrgI8

It was never the animals fighting but the owners.

My dog would 100% try to fight a kitten. Small beings confuse and bewilder him.

Empathy - even cats and dogs get it.
ghostly69
I suspect cats and dogs are more "pro life" than some hunman organizations

Of what I understand, -most- animals seem to take care of others if there's no competition for basic needs, territory and mates.

Dogs love cats. Unfortunately most dogs are bigger and louder than cats, causing the cat to be afraid and run away. Dog thinks they are playing and chase, making it worse. Sometimes their hunting instincts kick in and they will kill the cat.
If given a chance to acclimate with each other, then we get the above video.

Hanna Barbera created the Dog/Cat culture war so they would not realize they were being exploited all this time.

Ozzie and Chili (cats) and Rush hanging out in the bathroom for no reason at all.

Well you know, I also hang with my friends for no particular reason at all. I call it Saturday. ;)

Both cats and dogs are social mammals with long cooperative relationships with humans. They form bonds very quickly when they are not forced to compete

The reason for the dog/cat "feud" is that they don't automatically understand each other. Cats misread dogs who want to play as aggressive, and dogs misunderstand the cat's agitated tail swishing as being delighted and ready to play. Cat-astrophe ensues. When they are introduced as young, understanding of the other's strange manners develops.

I had a farm cat that would feed stray animals that were injured. He would knock is bowl over at them or drag it to them.
LoudBirb
Yep. IIRC, feral housecats often live in colonies whose members will take turns kitten-sitting for each other while the parents go hunt/scavenge.

Probably they can be considered intelligent life form, as we humans are not that. We could learn a lot from them, but unfortunately the only thing we learn, for example from history, is that we learn nothing from it.
Katzenkorps
Downvoters seem to consider themselves as intelligent... 😜

Mnah, all animals just be dumb globs of chemistry brought about by a long chain of emergent reacts to state of reality.
Katzenkorps
Intelligent form of life would write "all animals just ARE..."... But, animal haters just hate and humorless truth tellers do the same and that's it. Let's see can I get -100.

Ya do get that im including humans as animals, right?
