computer

OneDrive is a useful tool if you're a business. Set it up and whatever computer your employees log onto, their files will be there. Best if you have the server onsite of course.
It's also useful as an intermittent off-site backup in case your computer catches fire in the summer heat.

"You don't own shit" - Companies, 2024

1 year ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

as an extra “F U” Microsoft locked the toolbar to the bottom of the screen. I want Windows 7 back.

1 year ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 2

you can unlock it

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Not on Windows 11. You used to be able to move it to other sides of the screen, now you can't.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They started rewriting the taskbar because the old code was shitty. I mean, it was first built for Windows 95. They're still working on it, but not all features have been added yet, and I believe they mentioned that moving it to another side was something extremely few people used, so it's not high on the list of priorities.

There is no "cloud" - it's just someone else's computer. Fuck the cloud!

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

File > Options > Save > Set default local file location to your documents folder or wherever

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Still waiting for the class action against Microsoft because they started syncing documents to their "cloud" without proper user agreement. In my days that was called data theft.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Here's my paranoid suspicion: AI needs you to cooperate with The Cloud arrangement so it can "learn" stuff by combing through your files.

1 year ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 3

That is not paranoid at all.

1 year ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Bruh, that's literally what it does. Google does the same thing, it feeds your emails and documents to AI in order to train it.

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I feel like the people that hate and decry OneDrive are the same people that would cry when their hard drive dies and they lose all their information because it wasn't backed up to OneDrive.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Remember, dont use Adobe anymore, they pretty much made it so they can steal anything anyone uploads to their cloud.

1 year ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

My father bought a new laptop and then when they went on vacation to a condo (without internet/wifi), he discovered that he had access to none of his files because they were all saved in the cloud by default when he thought they were just saved on the hard drive of the laptop. This was 15 years go. I still don't consider it safe to store personal data in the cloud. Hacked cloud storage by data miners is way more likely than my stuff getting hacked.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I like that I can log into any computer at work and all of my documents are right there where I can find them.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I worked in IT before cloud computing….and you could do this then. Local servers held the data.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I remember when I had an 8GB HDD, and partitioning it in 3 parts for the OS, games and progs, and datafiles.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I still do keep all my files in a external drive - full weekly backups
Memory is really cheap nowadays

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And yet, it's the best advice to give to people so they don't lose their files and family photos.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

You can still backup to something that isn’t in the cloud. We haven’t always had cloud storage and we did just fine. ;)

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

And if the house burns down you lose it all.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You own nothing anymore. Everything is leased to you based on the license you agreed to upon purchase of your... everything.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

First of all. I love the humour on this meme. But some of ya all are actually thinking it's legit advice instead of humour. Apple does that too and in the enteprise environment cloud drives are king. Very useful for multi-device people. I swear y'all need to be forced to do IT support for your relatives to understand why some feature exists in 2024.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

I’ve worked in IT for almost 20 years and see the legitimacy of the meme. Windows is not what it used to be and Apple does not annoy you to use iCloud unless you are on a mobile device that doesn’t have local storage.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I wouldn't mind OD if it didn't restructure my files+folders on my actual PC and add ugly checkmark icons. Either work invisibly or GTFO

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

That actually used to be the case in the start. But that's a feature not a bug. I could go into details but it ain't worth it. But i'm not some blind fanboy. My beef with it is it should be more customizable for people like you or me who need some more oumf. I dream of a .gitignore-like file that I can put my exceptions of what to sync. I've been bitching to MS for ages for that.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Yeah, i have a smaller C: drive, for the OS only and a large F: drive for files (docs, pics, etc) - makes it very easy when I build a new PC or want to reinstall windows. Onedrive decided this is unacceptable, and pulled EVERYTHING back onto the C drive in its own onedrive folder structure instead of just leaving it as-is. It took registry changes to fix afterwards. Now I use my own NAS and I won't allow OD on any PC that i own.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Good for you. But I have to say. The majority of consumers are much much dumber to be able to think they have 2 drives and they can do that. And you have a NAS and all. You sir are a proper power user. Maybe I'm I'm grizzled but the volumes of tech illiteracy I've seen...Haunts me

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Amen. I see a post like this and think everyone should be forced to work in IT for a month.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 4

Or to f-ing dropbox!!!!

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

IT for a big company. Me 2-3 times a month: "Yes, we were able to replace the computer that suddenly died on you. Your important work files? They should be on OneDrive....what? You don't trust OneDrive? Got it. Well, they're all gone due to the disk encryption we can't crack...so yeah. They're safe. In fact they're so safe even YOU can't access them now."

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I fucking hate one drive

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Then ditch Windows. I know it's all played out, but MS will never have your best interest in mind. Mining your data just pays so much better than just selling you an operating system.

1 year ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 8

Regular folks might be ditching windows, but nearly every business with over a certain amount of employees perpetually leases Office 365 and everything that comes with it. Microsoft has the business world in their grips, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

1 year ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Sadly you are correct. Front office certainly.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep. The fact that they happily let you run it unlicensed with the only downside being a water mark and being unable to change the wallpaper tells you they value customer data extraction more than a one off purchase cost.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I love technology, always have. But this is the worst technological achievement mankind has ever developed. Yep, even worse than that

1 year ago | Likes 108 Dislikes 7

Loving technology is weird. Tech is neutral, humans with addresses either do good or bad things with it. I'm glad you've had mostly good experiences with it. OneDrive is not even in the worst 10 technologies we've developed. It is really bad though

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

It is a great and amazing technological achievement and could solve many problems. The problem, as always, is the people ruining it for their own gain

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I love technology but not as much as as you I see but yes I love technology always and forever

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Being forced is the worst. Being able to access work files at home and on my phone is fine. Just don't force everything to it.

1 year ago | Likes 56 Dislikes 1

I 100% refuse to access work documents on my phone.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

100% I olny do this for "I told you, so" moments

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right. A client suggested it would be easier to keep up with their team if I installed Slack on my personal cell phone. I said "Thank you for the suggestion," and didn't. I need that buffer space that is uncontaminated by things I do for other people for money to keep my sanity.

I don't know- remember when we put lead in gas and it practically turned an entire US generation into unfeeling psychopaths who currently are in charge of the US?

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

What, cloud storage? It's actually quite handy in many cases.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Even worse than this?

1 year ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

Wait. Are you saying we shouldn't nuke the planet with C02 offsets from unhelpful AI no one asked for?

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Why don't you disable it or even uninstall it? You can even turn it off in the Startup Apps settings so it doesn't launch automatically.

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That won’t solve OPs problem. All Office Apps now think they know best when it comes to file locations. Even if you *do* want to save to the cloud, they make it a multi-step process to choose where, and the default is silly and cannot be changed

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

File > Save As > Browse > and then choose a location on your PC, but be careful, because OneDrive is still a GD option

1 year ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Bit dramatic ain't you? You just have to change the path. Yes it sucks and yes it is terrible design but it is a 3mins change

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 21

It's a slippery slope when people start accepting garbage quality of any product (including software) as the norm. As soon as a company get's away with it, many will follow, and then it becomes the normal thing to do.Don't encourage this, it hurts everyone (me, you, others) with the exception of the company that sell that product.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I still backup to an external as well. As a programmer I don’t trust ANYTHING. I don’t even have a smart thermostat.

We definitely hit a peak with technology and now we're going downhill. I saw a comedian joking about how we can charge our heatable shoes through the USB in our couches. We don't need this shit. We need to keep improving what we have, not making more useless crap

I actually tried finding rechargeable hand warmers a couple years ago while on a trip to England, they were experiencing record lows and I hate the waste from Hot Hands and the way you have to boil the reusable ones. Couldn’t find them IRL. But yeah, my end tables came with “usb plugs” and they were just really crappy usb cables that you screwed to the back of the tables. So much waste. :(

1 year ago | Likes 175 Dislikes 1

You mean Skydrive

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yeah, then the disk fails and people come crying and bitching i need to rescue their files... also - onedrive saves the date 'also' in the cloud, not exclusively. there remains a physical copy on the drive. also also onedrive is a very convenient "1" for a 3-2-1 backup strategy.

1 year ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 17

Yeah just don’t make it the default in a horrific save dialogue would be nice.

Ok, not *at all* to excuse one drive and Microsoft data mismanagement, as there are *way* better options for ensuring that data is protected, but I manage machines with all together about 30 drives, and I've seen 4 failures in the past 5 years. Maybe I'm unlucky, maybe they don't make 'em like they used to, but I gotta push back on the implication that it's so rare that it's not necessary to have a plan in place to protect your data.

Better question, How low of a rate would it have to be for you to be for you to not want a back up? I don't do cloud back up, but I sure as tinned beans have multiple drives backing up things I don't want to lose.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

In this case, I'm surprised you're being downvoted. Storage devices sometimes fail, no ifs, no buts. Asking how often storage devices fail these days is like questioning why you should wear a seatbelt. Google also recently demonstrated that Google Drive sometimes fails and loses customer data.

Agreed, but they still fail. I repair computers for a living and while I've seen many more HDDs fail, I've seen SSDs fail too (four off the top of my head). One absolutely should still have backups. For any bit of data you don't want to lose, you should have at least one backup. Having said that, OneDrive et al is a shit backup solution partly because it makes one's data more vulnerable.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, on my new computer it automatically saved everything to the cloud and NOT to my hard drive. Even program files. I had to manually copy everything local, delete it from the cloud, and then I turned the whole fucking cloud off. And the Documents folder points to the cloud, the one that's there by default and used to point to your local drive. So now the one under OneDrive *and* the one that looks like your local one both point to the cloud. I had to go to the C drive and find the real /1

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Documents folder and add my own shortcut to it. It's all fucked up. Someone who doesn't know anything about computers would have no fucking clue what was going on. Oh and the best part was that as soon as MS filled up my OneDrive by routing all my files there, they popped up a message that I needed to buy more or my machine would stop working. Fucking ridiculous. What choice would someone have if they couldn't figure out what was going on? MS holds it hostage, basically. /2

Print every file and save it in your basement, just to be safe

1 year ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 2

And don't forget to laminate the important ones to protect from water damage, stored inside a fire safe to protect against fire damage.

Get tiny10 or tiny11. Makes a custom iso with the bloat removed.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Revo Uninstaller is a great way to ditch most apps and bloatware programs which you can't get rid of via the control panel

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just built a PC for my sister, and one of the first things I had to do was remove OneDrive. It was right out the door locking up her system on startup with it's greedy BS.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That need for all of that is largely why I've stopped using Windows on my personal computers. Windows is just a mess. Win11 is probably the worst OS I've seen.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hear there's a windows 11 "government" edition out there with all the bloat removed. It's not official, but they went so far as to remove MS Paint.

Biggest thing you should do is uninstall OneDrive. Then remove Remote Desktop. Then if you have win 11, use regedit to get rid of Copilot. Then disable the services that likes to phone home to Microsoft. Then keep an eye on any big Windows updates, because they like to reset that shit.

1 year ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

It was a snap, I did it with only 1 years experience using a computer, while in my 50s, so proud of myself, LOL. I'm sure a pretty young thing like you can do it. 🙂 Dual boot, ftw.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Look into Oracle VirtualBox. Free, accessible virtualization software. Try the Lunix before you commit to dual booting or anything. :)

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sounds like a dual boot setup might be good for you.

1 year ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I've thought about it. I have an Old "all-in-one" that needs some repair. If I don't destroy the motherboard soldering new ports onto it, I'll probably try practicing getting Linux to go on that first since I don't really care if it bricks and ends up at the E-cycle center.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll always champion Linux Mint as the first try into linux. Aesthetically similar to windows but with none of the bs. Easy to use, lots of apps and tonnes of support as its a debian base.

And flatpaks make things even easier. Oh and no forced updates.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I am dual booting W11 and Mint at the moment, but don't really see any reason to keep Windows any more

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WHat all do you need to do? One Drive came with mine too; I just simply didn't use it. I don't remember having to turn off much of anything.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It automatically uses One Drive to store everything on your desk top. I never noticed before, but when Windows bought out Hotmail (Yes, I use my email account from 1994) I was suddenly using Microsoft Outlook.
Got a new computer a few months back, realized I had 'exceeded my storage limit' on One Drive, which meant... I just wasn't getting any new emails for about a month.
In my scramble to get rid of that shit I accidently deleted the contents of my Desktop, including all icons, lol.

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

It's a serious concern though, putting aside that people don't trust MS who are making the damn OS, there's a lot of blind trust placed in random third parties with a "just run it, it'll fix everything" attitude. Even on linux there's a lot of trust in "sudo wget https://example.com/setup.sh | sh" magic convenience

And every year they add more things that the only way to fix it is with registry edits. When I updated to win 11 I had to re add .txt to the "new" options in the right click menu, but don't worry, they have it set up so that creating a blank .bmp file is a permanent addition that you can't remove.

I finally had to disable edge synchronization because it kept overwriting my work profile (that I only use on edge) with my personal information from chrome, which it regularly steals without asking, then I have to scrub all of my data back out of edge and re-set up all my work stuff. 1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Have fun with it! Your PC will change over time with you, you don’t have to do “all the things” right away.
My recommendations for newbies:

Haha! Awesome, thanks! (I read through that list like: yes, yes yes, awesome, thanks, brilliant, ok will do... NEVERRR!!)

Yep, step one on a fresh install is the removal of bloatware and the revoking odlf permissions to everything that comes stock with windows.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is there a standard list for unfucking windows?

No, it is answering the question perfectly. Microsoft is forcing more and more insane bullshit into their OS, advertisements and AI bullshit. If you want a de-bloated OS don't use a bloatware filled OS in the first place.

I have Mint on most machines, but I need one Windows pc. One of my Mint PC's has bad day though, screens wont listen to me and chromium fucked up my history. Most of the other days in the year, it's fine.

That's like saying "Unhappy with the gas mileage on your Honda civic? Get a Cybertruck"

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's like suggesting someone pull an Ernest Hemingway to deal with a headache.

1 year ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Do you see how deliberately unhelpful that is? That's like if someone asked where to get a good burger and you directed them to a hot dog place.

1 year ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

You purposely answered the wrong question.

1 year ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Purely out of brand loyalty.

1 year ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Done. New question: is there a standard list for unfucking macOS?

1 year ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Nope because of you do you'll probably fuck the whole computer up

1 year ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yep. Get a PC. (Wash, rinse, repeat ad nauseam...)

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's the neat part... You don't.

1 year ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

You can't...not don't....can't. There is a difference.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yes, step 1: Install linux. I am coming up on my 20 year anniversary of ditching windows completely and every single day microsoft reminds me how right I was to do so. Paying a multi-billion dollar company for the privilege of using your own hardware is insane, and they are shoving more and more insane bullshit into it every single day.

Yes, install Linux, never play a pc game again.

Does Steam still work on Linux? I don't know anything about it

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Linux support for games is getting there but there are still MANY games that it does not work with, or that take a lot of fuckery to get working. If you are an avid gamer, I would not recommend using linux for games. At least until you get very familiar with how linux works. Dual booting is always an option.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Steam Decks run on arch Linux, so yes.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yes, Valve have done a lot of great work with Proton to make a hell of a lot of games work through that on linux systems, its as easy as checking a box in the games launch settings to get most games running on linux

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It does. Alot of games even run better. HOWEVER, anticheat (the software) does not... so that may lock out certain online games. Squad 44 is currently one of the ones stopping me from just switching.

1 year ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hm. I'd have to look up a list. Just got Monster Hunter Rise on PC. It's online.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of us can't use Linux for work, even if we dearly want to.

I've got more than one Mint machine. But I need Windows for Itunes. There is really nothing I've found under Linux that I like better. And for some business stuff, I need Office.

1 year ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

"I need Windows for Itunes" is an amazing sentence lmao.

1 year ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah, my friends have gotten used to it by now. Lol. It's just that I works for what I need.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Open office is shit.

1 year ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have libre office, but with the complicated Excel stuff I do, I'm not gonna trust it to be converted perfectly. And I just know my way better round Excel since I've used that for more than 25 years.

"Run an admin PowerShell and run this random script" I think I'll just live with the bloatware, thanks

1 year ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

It's a script. You can use your fucking eyes (or screen reader) and look at what it does.

1 year ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I'm sure some people can tell exactly what it does, & if it's safe. The overlap between those people and the ones who are actually going to run that seems rather small
