What do you mean was. it still running on my PC. best player. ever. dont take up alot of screen space and eat very little resources AND have the ability to increase CPU priority so even under 100% CPU load it still runs without a hitch.

I was in a bar the other day where they were using winamp to play music, blast from the past!

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I still use it especially with GForce Visualizer and skin with transparency, blue stars background is not part of the skin, sorry for crappy screengrab

I thought the code release was an absolute shitshow? I see no binaries there.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was; they just dumped the entire source and included a lot of commercial code they didn’t have rights to include, then tried to undo it once they understood how badly they’d messed up, but it has been forked thousands of times by that point

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

whats the difference between this and the legacy download on winamp.com?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Legacy is newer, we don't trust the new owners of winamp, so most people stay with the previous version, 5.666 I believe is the last that was good.

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

3000 forks. Amazing.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3k forks from the original upload done by the current owners of WinAMP. But they did it so gloriously bad, it got the open source community clowning on them, from the owners breaking github's own TOS with a bad license, to them breaking the TOS on a bunch of closed source software that they put up as well with it, to them not understanding that "deleting" a file on github does not delete it from the history thus still there.

I had it on my slider keyboard smartphone

Does it still really whip the llamas ass?

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's potentially dangerous to run software that hasn't been patched in years.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There's been a recent new version.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

sure, but an app that doesn't hit the internet running on a machine with firewall and security patches is about as safe as it gets.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I built a new computer and installed my copy of Winamp. It just works.

2 weeks ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

This. It does exactly what I want it to, and it does that thing well. I don't want a multimedia 'app' that does several things badly.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Reading word: "Monster"
My brain, who constantly remembers those times i saw all the individual files when i was working on Winamp skins used for that one summer: "Monoster"

Can't help myself: In the Hall of the Mountain King is Grieg.

We also used plugins like ShoutCast to make own internet "radio stations" from our playlists. I remember tuning in to stations all over the world. For a listener, just a double-click on a link. No logins, no payment, no ads.

Still use the previous to last version. Free clean software, with no spyware, no stupid "AI", no nothing. It works, and does it wonderfully, period.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is there still a way to find and download it?

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

https://www.softonic.com/descargar/winamp/windows/post-descarga/v/5.666?dt=internalDownload Last decent version is 5.666, but old Winamp being winamp, pretty much all of them (old ones) work.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

FOOL! i'm still there.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm still running it now; all the windows are turned off and I use global and media keys to control it.

I'm old, and have had no desire to pay for my music again after building my CD collection; so I ripped them, dumped them in a folder, and copied it to my phone. No advertisements, no streaming cost.

Long live 5.666!

To play the .mp3s that we...acquired with Napster.

I got mine from mp3.box.sk, to find ratio FTP servers. Yes, I am that old.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just got my music from the ol computer herpes store, aka Limewire.

My star wars skin is preserved here. https://skins.webamp.org/skin/39afab2e56c07a9b71d9cdf557774660 Imperial_Assault.wsz - Winamp Skin Museum

Holy crap! That was _you_? I'm not going to download that skin right now because I still have it from ~25 years ago when I was in undergrad!

2 weeks ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's a good skin! It's weird how small a place the internet is sometimes.

2 weeks ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you mean, »was«? I literally used that today. Still works quite fine, except for maybe zooming. On modern high-res displays it gets kinda small, even when using the double-scale option. But aside from that... quite nice, still.

2 weeks ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

How can I download it?

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't recommend it, it's ancient and hasn't been patched in years. That's a lot of time for people to discover vulnerabilities.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

While I basically agree with pointing out the underlying problem, I am still pretty sure it's no actual problem, unless you get your audio files from... questionable sources. The chance is definitely not zero, yes. But the probability that someone hacks you via a media file being loaded or displayed by Winamp is pretty low anyway. But would indeed be an interesting question, if it would hold up against scrutiny today.

nic.com/descargar/winamp/windows/post-descarga/v/5.666?dt=internalDownload">https://www.softonic.com/descargar/winamp/windows/post-descarga/v/5.666?dt=internalDownload I suggest this one because winamp.com is the new owners, and they have tried stupid corpo shit. So we don't trust their "legacy" version.

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

First thing they did was fucking up the shortcuts. On a QWERTY keyboard the keys yxcvb are controlling the main buttons in the same order as they are displayed. On a QWERTZ keyboard it's slightly different, zxcvb. Guess what they fucked up? Yes, the y and the z on a QWERT keyboard. Now all of a sudden your back-button is 2 lines up in the middle of the keyboard, instead of next to the play-key. Those are some software engineers there... They *really* know the product they are working on... /s

2 weeks ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You know what, I can forgive that. But their fucking intent of somehow integrate NFTs (which they seem to have abandoned for the moment) told me the new owners were a bunch of tech bros with nothing but ill will.

2 weeks ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's basically my point, also. It's not about delivering a product that works reliably and serves a (worthy) purpose any more. If you ask me, this was more of a marketing move, to get the brand and their mobile version a publicity boost. And that whole going-open-source debacle adds to that. While I'd *so* love to see the application get some improvements, I doubt I will ever see anything meaningful on that front from them. (If you guys @ winamp read that, I'd love to see you prove me wrong!)
