One could argue the burned components is not the root cause, merely an intermediate step. Why did they burn? The harder rust(?) spots hint at some dampness. Condensation?
Ah so something sorta important. And I'm sure water intrusion is quite a bad thing. Anything I've build is not exterior (arcade sticks, laptops and such) so sealing must be a bitch.
So this all comes together in a kit - the switch, a PoE surge protector, a PoE injector that takes power from 'bare' 120v lines, and a weatherproof box it's sealed it. The box has a seal around the edges and foam plugs for where cables come in and out. Somehow the seal failed on the hinges side and bugs and water got in. We think someone torqued the box during install and deformed the gasket, letting it all in.

Stop inviting the water over.

Probably because you took it apart... /s :p

Yeah it’s only the newer stuff that is actually IP rated all the early stuff is just splash resistant

Some times the magic smoke must just be released!

Outdoor switch, was in an exterior housing that's seal failed. Water and bugs all throughout the box.
xenothing
Looks like there’s a spot for a gasket around the edge, could be failing
fadingtheory
The gasket 'failed' when I smashed it open with a 12 in pry bar. Water got in through the port face.

I think the “rust” is just staining from smoke/heat/arcing
fadingtheory
Oh no, there's burning AND rust. The back of the ports on the other side is particularly bad.
stingerau
Hmm you’re right it’s not all burning, but I’m not sure it’s rust. Possibly splatter from burst capacitor electrolyte.

..... Why are there syringes there?

Heatsink paste. There was a PC being built further down the bench.

Ahhhh. Thought I stumbled across a computer heroine cult for a sec haha. What's the board for?
fadingtheory
PoE passthrough switch. Mounted in an exterior box, then to a pole, then to a camera and a wireless antenna.
