MFW my conservative co-worker "wisely" says the Iran/Israel conflict has been going on for "thousands of years."

Even after I looked at him and said, "Really? Iran has been in conflict with a country that was established less than a hundred years ago for thousands of years?"

I mean, I know it's a complicated issue, but it's not hard to get an understanding of at least SOME of the basics.

Conflicts between jews and other cultures is as old as Jewish culture. Israeli conflicts, by definition, are no older than 1948.

People have been fighting there for at least 20,000 years. Neighbors, families, clans. No one ever could get along. Like the rest of the world.

Well if you ask some Jews their people have been there basically since the continent was first formed.

When you generalize and extrapolate enough, this conflict has been going on since the big bang

Some would say the big bang happened as a result of the iran/israel conflict /s

Before Iran was established as a country, it was known as Persia (they battled the Spartans in ancient Greece). For isreal this has been going on for over 2000 years.

iirc, Israel was instead founded in the last millennium

So a coupple of millennium before that: United Kingdom of Israel
The land was united under Jewish rule by King Saul, David, and Solomon around 1000 BCE.

Kingdoms of Israel and Judah
Around 931 BCE, the United Kingdom was divided into the Kingdom of Israel in the north and the Kingdom of Judah in the south. The Kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BCE, and the Kingdom of Judah was conquered by the Babylonians in 586 BCE.

I hear they were on a break though.

So, the conflict they're facing now is a continuation of the Battle of Thermopylae?

No, just establishing a timeline for when these nations existed.

...with a bit of a break in the middle there, when Israel ceased to exist as a civilization for 1800ish years...
