A year ago I bought this ship, a classic Dutch 'tjalk'. Originally built in 1896. She is in rough shape now, but the goal is to restore and transform her into a live - aboard sailboat.
Enjoy!

1 year of progress

I added a bunch more plywood to the interior walls, side, and ceiling.

Finished the ceiling

Painted the ceiling and placed the pipe for the woodstove.

I ran some wires for the bedroom, insulated and sheeted the walls

Bedroom floor and fitting the bed frames

I placed the living room/kitchen floor (22mm pinewood)

All done, it started to feel a lot homier

Placing the wood stove was a bit of a chore, it was so heavy it took 4 people to move it.

Burns beautifully! For the observing Dutch viewer, yes, this pic was taken December 5th.

So far the main focus was making the inside pretty and liveable, until I fell through one of the temporary wooden sheets that covered the engine area. So I had some new lids made.

I made the countertop for the kitchen.

I strategically placed the water pump in the (would be) the least accessible kitchen cabinet.

After finishing the kitchen area I shifted my attention to the bathroom and made some lights and mirrors where the basin is going to go.

I covered the shower walls with this funky metallic blue Bidond, and after that I dry fitted the bathtub

Secured the bath, and tiled the rest of the area

Same floor as the living room

Tiles all done.

done

I made a little bar area, the planks are made from old railroad ties.

Really pleased with how it turned out.

I added a bunch more insulation to the big area's between the windows. This helps to reduce the condensation. The steel around the window will be covered with cork at some point.

A bit more finishing work

With the bathroom, kitchen, electrical work, heating, water, etc. all functional it was good enough to move in. The area is nice and quiet, and this greatly decreased the cost of living. Best move ever!
Thanks for viewing!
Yet to come;
- A nice settee
- Basin is the bathroom
- The rest of the boat!

Great work. I can feel the extra effort in working in constrained spaces and the fact you have to plan every step for materials. In my parts people will usually dry dock the boat, sometimes remove the keel (if possible) and have a makeshift plastic canvas work area. These projects take time but the end result is of your personal taste. And you get to know your boat throughout.

Looks great, OP! I love the bathroom tiles especially. How is the insulation vs heat? Are you going to have an AC or is it cooler to begin with because you’re on the water?

Heel mooi en het is nog niet eens af. Uit nieuwsgierigheid komen er nog zonnepanelen op je boot en waar ga je de vloer mee aflakken/beitsen?

That's wickedly cool stuff @OP, incredible work so far! Best of luck to you :D

I know the exact location of the boat ..
I left the city your living in a few years back.
It was becoming a bit to hectic for me.
You are near the bridge for entrance to the canals where Sinterklaas passes.
The boat is looking nice though!
tomfromtomtomland
Yes, and this year the weather was especially shitty

Hey I live on a Dutch barge too that I'm also renovating! Hmu if you wanna exchange notes!
tomfromtomtomland
Sure thing! DM me :D
CulpaScintilla
Looks amazing! What does it cost in terms of mooring fees etc?
tomfromtomtomland
so far none :)

How much did it cost the boat only
Drunkenhalfling
Hey my parents used to have the exact same woodstove, I remember carrying it into the house, it was a nightmare. It was even worse that my parents never used it and put it on marktplaats after a while

Step 1). Buy a boat
Step 2). Restore the rest of the fucking boat
Orionsdick
Step 3). Bring in the hoes

This is what I like on Imgur. Do you by chance have a Youtube channel?

> I made a little bar area, the planks are made from old railroad ties.
You really need to be careful with that. Railroad ties have historically been treated with Creosote, and that stuff releases carcinogenic compounds in the air.
Awesome job otherwise.

To say nothing of the NOx, CO, CO2, and particulate matter emitted by the woodburning stove. The latter, even with modern "ecodesign" ones makes one stove the equivalent of 18 new diesel cars, or 6 new heavy goods vehicles.
Wood stoves and fireplaces account for almost a quarter of all particulate matter emissions in the Netherlands.
tomfromtomtomland
Thanks for the heads up! I'll look into it!
Truthsayer2024
Inside the boat, the concentration of PM2.5 could easily be almost 200% higher than normal when the stove was in use, rising to 250% - 400% higher after the door is opened to add more fuel. Tom could be experiencing PM2.5 levels in the boat 2x - 13x the average suggested by the World Health Organisation.

I really want to live on a boat. At first it seems like an expensive fantasy for if you win the lottery until you do some research and find out that it can actually be significantly less expensive than renting a small apartment, even including repairs and marina fees.
tomfromtomtomland
Yes, I was lucky enough to be able borrow some money for the purchase, and handy enough to be able to do the entire renovation myself. Really a ticket out of the living paycheck to paycheck for me
PlanckEraWasMyBestEra
I wish I was that handy! I will have to save up and buy a working boat and can hopefully learn to at least do the basic maintenance myself.

This is beautiful work!
I have an honest question. Is weight an issue with a house boat? A lot of the additions seem kind of heavy, esp the stove. Is that not a concern? I don't know boats.
tomfromtomtomland
Nope, this was originally built as a cargo vessel, it would be a challenge to get so much stuff in for it to be at its capacity.
BumbleBeeBeardedGingerBear
Sweet! It looks beautiful!

If you keep it docked next to the street, it's a sidewalk tjalk.
