Honestly with crochet i just wing it. I can't follow a pattern to save my life. Managed to make a beholder from DnD though :)

I use paperclips and mark my stitches in tens

I break my pattern up into sections. Rounds tend to have repeating patterns. Focus on the repeat. That is how i stay in task making doilies.
