That meme dump posted about 36 hours ago raised $3,200 to buy model rockets for my students at Howard Middle School. Y'all are AMAZING. Pat yourselves on the back.

If you want to donate more in the form of gift cards, I'll buy larger rockets to launch for the kids, as well as try to get enough engines that they can all launch twice again like they have the last two years.

I love you imgur! Here is what you can expect: A post from me sometime in August after the rockets come in. It will be here on Imgur. Throughout the 2025-2026 school year, I will make posts here to keep you advised about how our year is going. in March/April of 2026 when we get to our unit on space, my kids will build and launch their own rockets. We are going to punch holes in the sky!!!!!

March 1970. There is an episode of Star Trek my mother had not seen before on TV. She is also nine months pregnant. Shortly after the episode starts, she goes into labor. But mom LOVES Star Trek, so she toughs it out until it is over.

In the hospital after I am born, she wants to name me "Deforest"; after the actor who plays Leonard "Bones" McCoy. Thankfully Dad shut that down, so Mom picked James instead. I also did not get Tiberius as my middle name. I do love Star Trek, but I love Star Wars more. By Grabthar's Hammer.

THANK YOU IMGUR!!!!!

This is me. Note the lightsaber. It is purple. Why? Ask Samuel Jackson. Yes, I wear kilts to school. The kids love it. I am the Jedi Teacher.

Week 1 in the life of a teacher post is here. https://imgur.com/gallery/week-life-of-teacher-week-1-is-over-look-what-you-did-imgur-ClABX8M

What if you sell "sponsorships" on these rockets, have the kids design the rockets and post pics and videos of the kids having fun with rockets, donors get to see their name or whatever being launched into the sky!

That's a good idea. I'll try to remember to do that.

Glad to hear the fundraising was a success. Happy to have contributed. Science! 42!

My children have all been blessed with teachers as passionate about their subject as you. They ace those classes easily, due in part to the teachers wanting to share all the most fun parts of their subject.

Thank you for being a great teacher!

The fact that you are a middle school teacher with a light saber & not a sith lord says it all. Thank you for being THE inspiring teacher that your students will remember forever.

I hadn't even thought about it like that. Lol. There are definitely days when the dark side comes out, but nah, I'm more the harsh teacher like Mace Windu.

Best kind of teacher, you earn what you learn and remember it forever. You're creating memories for lifetimes.

The reason to love Star Trek over Star Wars... Star Trek shows us the fantasy that there is hope for humanity.

You should absolutely photo document some of the fun stuff, unboxing, when you determine the engine to get, it's apogee, retreival. Internet dads and adults who always wanted to but never did can participate :P

I bookmarked the post the other day so I could donate to the cause after taking care of a huge expense coming up. as a teacher in a Title I district myself, I am extremely happy to see this project has been funded for another year!

Thank you so very much.

That is pretty nifty. I remember being in high school and denied a chance to do this because I told another girl she was a bitch. That was it. My principal hated me. So pretty nifty to see rockets still continue on.

THIS. The internets of good people bringing it home for the win. Fuck yeah you guys restoring faith in humanity for at least one lonely person on this rock. May those kids all know how much the internet loves them and wants them to experience science at its finest!!

I used to just collect cash from the kids and go buy them. The district forces us to do it this way now. So I'm always amazed when imgur pulls together for my classroom like this.

Happy to contribute yesterday! You got me at the right amount of drunkenness where my sadness in the state of things and hope for humanity balance each other :-)

Can I interest you in a teaching career? You seem to have the qualifications. Also, thank you for the donation - greatly appreciated.

I work with two former students now who are teachers at my school. The first thing they talked about when they saw me was the rockets.

When we were going into Iraq, we were told we would be crossing some cleared minefields. Our squad did that in case we were blown up. I've kept mine there for luck ever since.

Yep, same. It also makes the EMT's job easier, when you get into a motorcycle wreck. (Don't ask how I know this) Still got my original set, issued 1982. Semper Fi!
